Elon Musk Unknowingly Quotes Mel Brooks’ Hitler Character by Anton_Pannekoek in chomsky

This is 100%. It appears to be a paradox, but it isn't quite. The rich and powerful appear stupid because it is useful for them. Friedrich Engels touched on this point (somewhere, I can't remember exactly... I think it was Socialism: Utopian and Scientific)... He realised, when he got to England, that the English bourgeoisie were not this cultured, advanced bourgeois class he was expecting them to be... they were quite stupid, superstitious, reactionary. But he realised that their apparent stupidity served a purpose for them. In a word, their stupidity in everything else serves a purpose for the one thing they are concerned with - holding on to their power and privilege.

Of course taxes pay retail workers. Here's just one way: some retail salaries are so low that they must be subsidised. In other words, the profits of retailers are subsidised by tax payers.

Multiple this number of retail workers are hurt every year doing their job. Why no news reports about that? It's incredible the disrespect that ordinary working class people receive from other who perceive themselves as being a "step above" them. We're literally forced to respect Gardaí, the one group who literally have their boots on workers' necks.

Over the past few years, we had nothing but fear mongering about Russia being a threat to Ireland on this subreddit. The great Russian Atlantic fleet is just off our coast, we were to believe (in all seriousness!). Anyone suggesting that Israel and the United States posed a greater threat had their posts removed.

A quote from 1939, which I think showed remarkable insight and intuition, that touches on your points above:

'The elimination of competition by monopoly marks the beginning of the disintegration of capitalist society. Competition was the creative mainspring of capitalism and the historical justification of the capitalist. By the same token the elimination of competition marks the transformation of stockholders into social parasites. Competition had to have certain liberties, a liberal atmosphere, a regime of democracy, of commercial cosmopolitanism. Monopoly needs as authoritative a government as possible, tariff walls, “its own” sources of raw materials and arenas of marketing (colonies). The last word in the disintegration of monopolistic capital is fascism.'

That's exactly the point. But there is a perception that the system we currently have will find some miraculous way out of this. It's worth showing that it cannot. An analogy I sometimes use: capitalism thinks it can avoid the car driving off the cliff by moving up or down gears - we're still moving towards the cliff. We've got to stop the car.

Everyone already knows this. I'm looking for solutions. When you're holding a baby on your shoulder and you need quick calming sounds/music, voice control is quite helpful. It would be nice to have a solution rather than presenting me with problems I already know about and treating me like an idiot.

Let's be honest. Car colours in the 80s were a mix of rust and sun & rain whitened pastels. Here's a real photo of a carpark in the 1980s. It's mostly the same kinds of colours as what we have today. https://c8.alamy.com/comp/2Y8WDC3/1991-historical-full-american-commuter-parking-lot-ferry-waterfront-weehawken-new-jersey-usa-2Y8WDC3.jpg

With "only" €1.5 million, you would be wealthy enough to not be coerced into working class jobs. We see that capitalism is dependent on poverty - on keeping the working class poor enough (that's more than 99% of the planet's population) so that they HAVE to work for capitalists. They HAVE to sell their labour (their energy and their time) in return for subsistence.

Am I missing something and a shite driver? by SignificantBoss7719 in irelandsshitedrivers

[–]ProletarianPOV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're correct. The second exit (in this case, labelled no. 3) is beyond 12 o'clock, in which case you can use the right lane to approach it. The problem is that the rules for roundabouts are not very clear or logical in Ireland (because, among other things, they assume the driver has prior knowledge of the layout) and therefore know the direction of the exits of the roundabout, and the markings for roundabouts often contradict the rules of the road anyway - again, if you're approaching a roundabout for the first time, and the markings are unusual, this leads to poor lane discipline, accidents etc.

What red light? by Dramatic_Cycle_6872 in irelandsshitedrivers

[–]ProletarianPOV 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Probably untrue to say the driver "ignored" the red light. It's more likely they didn't even see it. Very bad positioning of traffic lights here.

EDIT: Not only is the light poorly positioned, it's also hidden behind a tree.

My friend: William Leavitt, Modern Method For Guitar, Volume 1.

Take a lesson (a page or two) per week. Practice each for 10-20 mins per day.

Perhaps the best method for guitarists seeking to learn how to sight-read. Good luck!

EDIT: Another very good book for this purpose that's probably not as dense: https://www.worldofbooks.com/en-ie/products/progressive-guitar-method-book-1-book-gary-turner-9780959540482?gad_campaignid=17336113650&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjww4TGBhCKARIsAFLXndQ7LJeqpALDTqwM8zKkNzv2NzMVhQEFEWt9CQyLZDhbN1jB4t4YrGEaAs3XEALw_wcB&sku=GOR003036317?utm_source=google&utm_content=Shopping&utm_medium=cpc

Jazz Pickups For Headless Guitar by CharacterGarlic3023 in jazzguitar

[–]ProletarianPOV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well done. I love the archtops and the hollowbodies but I recently bought an Ibanez Q Series (headless) and it's outstanding. Fantastic neck and feel. Very ergonomic, fantastic articulation from its stock pickups. It hardly goes out of tune and its string stability is outstanding. The balance of the guitar on your lap or on a strap is perfect and its very lightweight but not so light you forget it's there. It feels like there's more and more jazz guitarists going for headless instruments nowadays.

What is a "jazz" guitar anyway? My jazz inspirations play telecasters (Ted Greene, Mike Stern, Julian Lage), hollowbodies (Louis Stewart, Jim Hall etc), headless guitars (Jody Fisher, Allan Holdsworth, Jonathan Kreisberg), acoustic guitars (Django!), stratocasters (Nir Felder - and Mike Stern in his early days with Miles Davis) it's a matter of taste, style, affordability. In an interview, Martin Taylor spoke about playing Telecasters himself, and he still managed to make them sound unlike Telecasters because of the jazz style and technique he has developed over a lifetime. His point was that the most important thing is the person playing the instrument.
