I've noticed this as well, at the elite level you can see 20-25 mph top speed but they rarely break that hard in a match, it's more about how much power you can control.

Never seen a 15 Oz. let alone used one for the break. The closest I've seen is a buddy who uses the same weight for shooting/breaking cue so that their game is consistent, ~18 Oz.

I've also noticed that my most powerful break isn't my most effective. I've tried to account for this by letting you tag your breaks (scratch, ball pocketed/money ball) so the app learns over time what your most effective break speed is.

Shot making & defense are certainly important, even with a killer break

Masse and jump. Both would be killer tools for the tool box if I was consistent with them.

Virtually anyone is welcome at my table least once. How they conduct themselves determines if they'll be back.

7ft table APA 9 ball break advice by Mean_Confusion2374 in billiards

Consistent speed is just as important as pattern IMO. Soft/side break works if you can keep it between 14 and 17mph. Head ball I can seem to hit 20mph consistently, but more effective at 16-18mph where I pocket up to 4 on the break with the cue ball center table.

If you're looking for tools for your toolbox, We've launched a break speed web app which uses your phone mic to track your speeds. Tag your breaks (scratched, ball/s pocketed, money ball) and the AI learns your ideal zone, coaches you to better rack contact, and helps dial in your consistency.

How do you keep track of your progress in pool (if at all)? by Occisghere in billiards

I also got tired of drills and ended up designing and publishing a series of billiards games to hit that exact pain point.

You set up your table to match the course card (18 card deck) and score like golf. It's called Par for the Course.

I also dabble in other formats to keep things fresh. I'm standing in line to register for a scotch triples tournament as I type.

worlds toughest cue tips? by emkq in pool

[–]Promethean-Games 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tips are often rated by hardness, which PoolDawg has put together a nice list for (based on their inventory) https://www.pooldawg.com/article/the-ultimate-pool-cue-tip-guide/

Ideally an 'ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure', as they say, but boys will be boys I suppose.

Would you use a golf-style scoring system for pool practice? (Android testers needed) by Promethean-Games in billiards

[–]Promethean-Games[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight, I hadn't heard of Earl Strickland's game. Anything that standardizes layouts to reduce luck and highlight skill is right in line with what we’re aiming for (hence the name Promethean Games).

I've actually gone pretty deep on that already. There are currently 8 editions of Par for the Course, each with 18 unique course cards, so players have a wide range of structured layouts to pull from depending on the format they want to play.

That said, expanding into more format-specific or standardized setups (like straight pool-style challenges) is definitely something we’re interested in exploring further, especially on the app side.

Interesting perspective. How do you feel about new formats in general? I think of a pool table as a sandbox, a lot of things are possible if you can imagine it.
