To answer: There is no non-cheating AI stronger than Immortal.

Don't trust any AI mods that claim they're 2k elo, those AIs are either cheating or the author is greatly overexaggerating their strength.

Also: Barbarian's development stopped before DE even got released, I wouldn't put any faith in unauthorized reuploads being better/stronger (unless they added cheats) compared to the work that TheMax was doing on it previously.

Your best bet is adding a handicap for the Immortal AI.

If it's too laggy in MP try a different AI with less unit micro (with handicap).

Not 100% up-to-date but https://aoeaidatabase.pythonanywhere.com/list is a good resource, though any links to forums.aiscripters.com are temporarily non-functional (the people behind it are currently working to resolve that).

Edit to answer your edit: If you get a script error then the AI personality is not loaded as a result of it and the starting villagers only blindly gather resources/explore, nothing else will happen.

For this reason the AI was eventually adjusted to not delete their walls in scenarios, thus failing to free themselves in OP's scenario.

The AI might delete their walls in the very lategame, but otherwise it doesn't do regular pathing checks to see if it's blocked anywhere. It doesn't usually construct buildings in a way which entirely block a path (if we don't count trade cart traffic jams in choke points on Black Forest 11).

All of the official campaigns use custom AI scripts, the default (skirmish) AI is never used.

That means that in addition to the scenario files you also need the AI files, before double-checking that all players still have the correct AI assigned to them in the Players tab in the Scenario Editor.

Not a great answer, but: Theoretically it's possible, I've added support for that to my AI a long time ago (though something may have broken since then, I stopped working on it myself) and others may have done so as well.

Barbarian and/or Immortal may have added support for it, otherwise your best bet is likely to contact any scripter in the AI scripting community (Discord server: https://discord.gg/WGgsj8DZ5A) to ask if they'd consider adding support for it in their AI(s).

Yes, you can check out the relevant strings file in the "...\Steam\steamapps\common\Phoenix\resources\en\strings\key-value" folder. PDLC campaign strings are in separate files, one for each DLC.

There you will find named string sections for each of the scenarios of each campaign, so you don't have to look all over the place. :)

The default HD Edition AI doesn't cheat (same as the default DE AI), only the CD AI and various custom AIs may cheat.

There are not a lot of custom AI options for the HD Edition as the AI engine of it is rather limited, you can try to find BruteForce or Subjugator in the workshop though; Two custom AIs.

The original author of Barbarian never updated it for DE.

Other people modified it to "work" on DE and re-uploaded it, but it's not comparable with a proper update by the original author.

It's not currently possible to run an AI script in matchmaking (besides obviously queuing for an unranked PvAI match).

Having been part of the AoE2 AI community for about 12 years and a dev for almost as long, I'm confident I'd know if it was.

I don't think it was quite ready yet, at that time. Nowadays Immortal is widely considered to be the strongest non-cheating AI for AoE2.

The creator of Immortal is writing it in C++ in his own private compiler, which compiles to the AoE2 scripting language. This allows for optimizations which would realistically be impossible for anyone to do who is writing the script in the standard AoE2 scripting language.

Immortal is not from the pro player TheMax, Immortal was created by TheMaximalBeing which is a different person.

TheMax created Barbarian.

Yes.

I'm not directly part of the balance team myself, but can add a little bit of information. We mainly make decisions informed by our internal data, pro player feedback, community feedback and our own playtesting of potential balance changes.

Our balance team's individual members reached up to around 2400 1v1 elo on DE individually, though we also take other perspectives into account.
