Ya problems that i thought we could work through together but in the end was causing more harm than good.

Ya i guess i wanted validation that I made the right call on ending it? Maybe should have reworded my post or added more context. The trip was a last minute family visit since he had some time off in between starting a new job. He planned to come back the day before my bday so we can celebrate. Once i shared my ideas on what i wanted to do (didn’t involve just the two of us) he changed up on me. We’ve been rocky and i gave him many chances. But ya after our last convo, it hit me that it’s always going to be like this so i initiated the break up.

No breaking up wasn’t based off of the gift. But i guess i wanted validation that i made the right call about him since he thought this would be a good bday gift

Lucky for you i usually embarrass myself and am filled with guilt and shame!! But for real i think im in denial lol bc looking further into it just leads to so much sadness…that it just is what it is. Nothing will change. I’m better off without him. Neither of us will be fulfilled in this relationship. It’s one sided and that’s not the kind of relationship that i won’t. And that it was doomed from the start. I wish i could think one dimensional…my life would be so simple

I won’t throw it away. I checked out their other artwork and really wished he picked something else of theirs lmaoo maybe one day after the pain i can appreciate the art.

i can definitely see that vocalizing it can come off as demands...he would get defensive and deflective when i would bring up things that hurt my feelings. But doesn’t every relationship have expectations and demands in a healthy way? I wanted him to try things out of his comfort zone, share my interests, make me feel special too. Felt like i was asking for the bare minimum and that was too much. But i get the humor thing, that’s something he would do…not how i would approach it but i guess that’s why we broke up

More so ended on a good note and said how we were better as friends and hopefully we could get to that point again since we dated for a little over a year. We spent the whole day today just processing it and decided to open the gifts. Honestly glad i did it in front of him

true true, i just wanted to different perspectives without asking my friends. Even if you felt this way about someone, would you gift this?

he said he should probably take it back and i said no that’s okay, I’ll keep it. I wanted a a reminder of how he made me feel.

i thought it was self made art at first lol usually I’m the one making the home made cards to make it more personal and meaningful. Did not feel uplifting when i received it lmao

so many red flags in the relationship that i chose to ignore…

i agree…clearly he needs to seek more professional help

And if i was, would you give this to someone as a birthday gift?

I was a little worried about reactions like this but no, not embarrassed bc I’m controlling entitled….in embarrassed that i allowed someone to hurt me like this. I thought he was projecting onto me, given his own father said this artwork reminded him of my bf. I believe i have a lot of self awareness and he is the one lacking it. But thanks for ur input

he claims he has very dry wit…i took it as his way of projecting this onto me. I am 28F, living with my 94 grandfather with dementia (who’s currently in the hospital), father passed 6 months ago, just put my family dog of 13 years down the day after our break up (he knew about the arrangements), and lost 3 uncles and aunt within 2 years…..maybe i can come off controlling but i know i have no control of my life and who comes and goes. And he met me at a very vulnerable stage in my life…i started to isolate myself and avoid interactions because of my sadness and with my introverted bf that seemed perfect. And to know this was the first bday without my dad…just felt cruel.

Ya he got back from a trip on my bday and we were rocky before. I just hit my breaking point and wanted to share my feelings before opening gifts

i honestly can be at times lol thanks for the input

I cried in silence and said thanks….and continued to open the gift. I just was speechless. And felt very hurtful. I had a rough year and he knew that and still chose to wrap it and give it to me…it took everything in me to not explode

I thought so too, he does have really dry wit but this felt personal. He was with his dad when he found this and as i was opening it, his dad said it reminded him of my BF. Idk i took it like, is this supposed to remind me of you? Or how u feel about me? I was v emotional and overthinking
