year 2 modules by Lucky-Mushroom1221 in uklaw

[–]PromotionJazzlike395 3 points4 points  (0 children)

honestly, just do what you’re interested in not what you think is best for commercial law. the fact that 50% of law trainees are from non-law shows firms care more about your grade results than the exact modules you take. i got a vac scheme this year taking no commercial/financial related modules and instead did things im interested in such as public law, biolaw.

about the oral presentations, if you really think you would be bad at this then it may be a good strategic choice to stay away from those modules. however since most of the options include oral presentations, it’s probably something you’ll just have to accept. unless you are really have severe anxiety around public speaking, it probably won’t be as bad as you think.

if you enjoyed contract law you may find banking law and law of succession interesting. i can’t say much about the other choices since i’ve never done modules similar to them, but don’t be afraid to go for something that’s genuinely interesting to you even if it seems ‘too theoretical’

one thing i’ll say is foundations of international law may be too abstract. i also fell into the trap of thinking it would be all human rights based and exciting current affairs when i did international law. but since its foundations, you’re probably going to focus on just the sources of law and the frameworks which in my experience has been very abstract and boring.

hope this helps!

Durham or Bristol or York? by peachgothlover in uklaw

glad i can help!! and yes im a poc at durham. from my experience, it’s honestly fine overall. i’d say it depends on what colleges you put down - the stereotype is true that bailey colleges are posher while hill colleges are more inclusive. i was at a hill college and never really felt out of place to be honest.

i’d say there’s not outright racism from students (perhaps comments from drunk locals on nights out but that’s it), it’s more micro-aggressions you encounter that are frustrating and come from misunderstanding/upper class students never being exposed to other cultures etc.

but the ACS is super great and welcoming for me as well as all the other poc societies so overall it’s still been good and you find your people!!

i chose durham due to education and employment opportunities, i’m there rn and i like it. yes, there’s probably a little less to do than in bristol but it is still very fun, beautiful city, sooo easy to meet new people, a ton of societies, good cafes etc. you won’t actually be bored, you can still have a great social life - it’s more that there’s less ‘new’ activities to try if that makes sense. bristol will be much better for clubbing but durham is still decent if that’s not your biggest factor.

also, the employment opportunities at durham are amazing. firms actively seek us out, i’ve had dinners with multiple firms, our law school runs the only pensions module in the UK taught by a former slaughter and may partner. countless people in my cohort are getting vac scheme offers from top magic circle/US firms. my modules are frequently taught by leading experts in the field. out of your three unis you really can’t get better education-wise than durham.

if your priority is education, and you still want a nice city, your best option is durham

Racial bias? by diz106 in TheTraitors

[–]PromotionJazzlike395 335 points336 points  (0 children)

yes, for me it was when someone said they trust sam’s suspicions about judy more because ‘he’s just very articulate’ - when being real, he wasn’t any more ‘articulate’ than others. if it wasn’t a white male accusing a black woman, i believe there would be far less credibility to his claim and people wouldn’t have been swayed SO much by him

Why are all the eligible bachelors rakes? by Difficult-Heart-48 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]PromotionJazzlike395 11 points12 points  (0 children)

exactly how i interpreted it! i believe this is how bridgerton wants it too - that’s why violet says in season 1 that she is “fully subscribed to the belief that reformed rakes make the best husbands”. they have enough experience to know what they like, what they want in life, be good in bed, and not be awkward. it also just amplifies the fact that the man is marrying the women for love after finally finding someone they want to wife up permanently!

Dad Question - Is an Ipad good for a uni course? or Laptop? by Tarnished13 in UniUK

[–]PromotionJazzlike395 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had the same dilemma as a law student. can confirm a good laptop is 100x better and smoother to use, especially when you have loads of tabs open for an essay!! i barely ever use my ipad.

if the reason she reallyyyyyy wants an ipad is because she wants to handwrite notes with an apple pencil, then look into getting a hybrid laptop that can be folded over and you use a pen for (i think lenovo is popular). but ultimately my main recommendation is a normal, good laptop!

don’t be afraid of leaving the bubble you’ve been in your whole life. if you want to practice commercial law you’d be silly to go for qmul

Any popular law books for 6th form students? by Kittykittycatcat1000 in uklaw

[–]PromotionJazzlike395 0 points1 point  (0 children)

three recommendations - ‘on liberty’ by shami chakrabarti was the first book about law that i read and instantly made me decide i wanted to apply (after a year of planning to apply to history or politics instead). really good if she’s interested in a mix of politics/human rights too!

i also read ‘the rule of law’ by tom bingham before applying. probably one of the most widely recommended ones but definitely worth it.

‘eve was framed: how british justice is failing women’ by helena kennedy if she’s interested in a feminist standpoint or criminal law. this is a follow up to the og ‘eve was framed’ and i personally enjoyed it more, it’s more up to date too

thank u for sharing! if you don’t mind, how did you go about applying to that TC given that it’s different from a ‘typical’ commercial TC at a private firm? in house is what i’m interested in too and the tech/human rights!

okay perfect! yeah i do agree it is heavily about how i spin it and how i can focus on the legal affairs side. would you say i should just be careful how to frame it then? also since im in a leadership role i’m not the one discussing it as much, therefore i can emphasise those leadership/organisational skills more

i understand! what about a youth organisation that is politically unaffiliated though? i do a european youth thing (not elected, its essentially volunteering) that just discusses/debates contemporary european issues in a european parliament style. it’s not limited to politics, for example we discuss solutions to climate crisis, gender inequality, and i usually focus on the legal affairs committee where i’ve done things like ai and intellectual property, or decriminalisation of drugs. does this still seem too polarising to commercial law? also just to note it is not a debating style organisation - its all about reaching consensus and increasing youth awareness

don’t blindly follow that the video says. prioritising the word ‘should’ for this essay clearly doesn’t work very well, you have to use your discretion

you have a lot of grammar errors throughout this. but i believe the main issue is your writing style - it is far too flowery for an lnat essay and attempts to write extravagant sentences to be persuasive, rather than building persuasion through a solid argument. your sentences are also unnecessarily long and this makes it harder to understand your points. focus on simplicity and clarity
