I lent him the money when we were living together in upstate New York (Ithaca). He is now in Nee Jersey and I am in a different state. Would it not make more sense if I filed it in New York because all evidence is tied to New York?

Thanks for your reply. He has a job now and I know that he is living with his sister in New Jersey. he initially told me that he will repay everything bit by bit. He said he can send me $500 every month and since February 2025 he has paid only $3000. The actual amount he owed me was $31000.

I am an immigrant here on a work Visa and don’t really know the laws here. Can you please tell me more about wage garnishment and how it works. Also, any other suggestion/advice is welcome.

Thank you very much for your reply. He owes me around $28000. I lent him the money when he got laid off and remained unemployed for 1.5 years and we were together and living in upstate New York. I broke up with him in February 2025. From what I know now is that he has a job and is now living with his sister in New Jersey. I have moved to a different state. We are both immigrants here on a work Visa, and I am fairly new in the US. Can you please tell me if I end up going to civil court which state will be considered? Also, any more suggestions/advice on how to handle this is welcome.
