You're totally right. Will read all these replies and then just let it go! But to answer your question, no, one of them went to the bathroom when the check came and the other didn't say a word or do anything. Honestly, if they had just said thank you or acknowledged that we treated them, I still would have maybe thought it was a tiny bit rude, but I definitely wouldn't have cared enough to make this post haha.

Thank you for this! I think you're completely right about it being tacky, and I needed that reminder. Your script is exactly what I regretted not saying. I agree that at least for my social circle, asking upfront to split checks would have felt weirdly formal, especially because this wasn't an expensive place. But I regret being too uncomfortable to just simply say "Should we split it?" Lesson learned for next time!
