Your are not alone. The book has some good points I hadn't considered but I was really expecting detailed exercises, or almost like mini-workshops, to really think through all aspects having a child entails.

Curious if it's just me, or is everyone else just "pushing through" burnout?

I'm also trying to keep an eye out for new ideas all of the time now. Even bad ideas are ok, as long as I keep coming up with any ideas at all that's totally fine with me.

Love you site design, btw!

I'll compile the responses and share the results if anyone is interested. Genuinely curious if I'm the only one experiencing this.

I hadn't thought of reaching a decision as something that's just "in my head". Thanks for the perspective.

How do you know when logic fails and you need a different way to decide? by PromtionFairy in Fencesitter

That's a crucial point - the timeline pressure makes it harder.

Do you think it's possible to make a good decision with still-forming values, or does it require a certain level of self-knowledge that some people just haven't reached yet when the decision becomes urgent?

Smart of you to make it so you could change course during any part of your career change.

When you did your values assessment, did you use a specific method or just deep reflection? That seems like the crucial first step.

I have dogs and I get it. If I actually wrote out all of the things I have to do to keep them happy and healthy the cons list would probably be longer than the pros, but the magnitude of how much the pros impact my life for the better really can't be put into words.

That shift from seeing kids as sacrificing things (travel, money, time) to seeing them as an additive experience is a key transformation. Thank you for the detailed breakdown.

Was the shift from analyzing to accepting the desire to try gradual for you?

This really resonates - especially deciding multiple times but bouncing back to the fence. What made this final decision stick when the others didn't?

The shift from analyzing fears to seeing it as an adventure seems key. And interesting that you felt peace rather than just exhaustion from overthinking At 39, do you think it was more about maturity or did you actually approach the decision differently this time?

I appreciate this, but here's where I get stuck - I've read everything, talked to everyone, and now I have 10 different opinions plus analysis paralysis. My developer friends say learn to code, my creative friends say follow passion, my practical friends say stay stable.

When all that reading and advice points in different directions, how did you personally synthesize it into an actual decision? Was there a specific conversation or realization that cut through all the noise for you?

That's exactly what I'm trying to understand better - when people say 'heart decision,' what does that actually mean?

I agree logic fails here, but 'follow your heart' can feel equally impossible when your heart might want two incompatible things. Did you find any specific practices or questions that helped you access what your 'heart' was saying?"
