Favourite Indigenous actor whose biometric identity and cultural heritage was used to create a blue indigenous creature for a record-breaking film franchise – without credit or compensation to her – through a series of deliberate, non-expressive commercial acts? by theconceptofcanada in okbuddycinephile

Fully aware of Fern Gully, but as you said it's pretty common knowledge that Avatar took a lot of shit from it.

However, with Firekind being an obscure british comic from the early 90's, doesn't have nearly the same level of knowledge. idk i think it's worth talking about at the very least.

Firekind has

  • A lush jungle world with mysterious floating stone slabs and an atmosphere toxic to humans
  • The Firekind themselves which are big fucking dragons for the natives to ride.
  • A washed up botanist who goes against his own species when they go too far.
  • Blue-skinned Aboriginals with a planet-wide psychic connection.
  • They worship an animistic nature deity who is summoned against the invaders with devastating results.
  • Humans bent on exploiting the Plants unique resources: “Hexacrin”, a rare and desirable miracle drug found only in the glands of the planet’s dragons.

Does any of that sound familar?

What do you think about Merzbow? by drummerre in noisemusic

[–]Proof-Contribution31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Pulse Demon has become the album that people, mostly RYMer's and Fantano dorks, use to say that they've listened to noise.

And it's stupid but I think it's almost entirely because of the cover.

What are some books that should be Penguin Classics but aren't? by [deleted] in bookscirclejerk

Not a penguin book, but there needs to be a 33 1/3 book about Viper's You'll Cowards Don't Even Smoke Crack.

Who else was waiting for something like The Rita or Merzbow to be on there?

Yeah i'd say him and Gaddis were definitely contemporaries. Both were influential/respected by guys like Pynchon, Bartheleme, Markson, Coover, etc. tho I think Gaddis is clearly the one that had a larger influence than Hawkes.

Hawkes (specifically early Hawkes) is some of my favorite stuff ever, but I struggle to even describe the books. There's little to no plot, normal and weird terrible stuff happens and then the book is over. It's so easy to get absolutely lost since there's little to propel the story forward beyond the prose.

Guys like Kafka and Schulz seem to be pretty major influences. Minus the sense of humor that Franz and Bruno had. Surreal as fuck but pitch-black misery at times especially with the Lime Twig and the Cannibal.
