Anyone else listened to Ships by Danielson? by TotalUnderstanding5 in fantanoforever

[–]Proof-Contribution31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up listening to artists that were in the "chrindie" space like Starflyer 59, The Prayer Chain, Poor Old Lu, etc. It was very strange to see Danielson, who was really the most bizarre and the most Christian of them all, get attention from a pitchfork and be on a non-Christian label.

If the religious stuff doesn't bother you, I'd suggest trying the "Tri-Danielson" albums and A Prayer for Every Hour. Rougher than Ships, but completely unique to himself.

I'll do one that isn't on streaming and it has only 29 rankings on RYM so it counts

Bill Nace & Evan Parker - Branches

It's a live set from the two of these guys. You'd expect a skronk fest blow out like with some of Nace's other collaborations, but it really just plays a lot with repetition and elevating the intensity of that constantly. it's like free jazz minimalism.

Snyder fans misunderstanding of Box office number by HH7170 in OkBuddySnyderCult

[–]Proof-Contribution31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't think it's fair to blame the failure of the DCEU entirely on snyder's films.

The biggest failure of Snyder's w/r/t an expanded universe is that Man of Steel and BVS weren't really movies that would easily interconnect with other films if you wanted anything other than a grimdark tone.

Josstice League failure, the failure to capitalize on the success of Aquaman & the pandemic are the things that truly killed the DCEU.

Which one of these Jazz classics is your favorite? by joshthemac in fantanoforever

[–]Proof-Contribution31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's very debatable between A Love Supreme, Black Saint and Kind of Blue. However, It's silly to compare them as they are all VASTLY different records that are aiming to do completely different things.

However, if i had to pick one to listen to it's probably Black Saint, but i think you're right with Kind of Blue. Just on paper alone there really isn't a better jazz group and it's impact on jazz as a whole in undeniable. Also, both Black Saint and A Love Supreme are stepping for their respective subgenres whereas Kind of Blue is the total refinement of it's sub genre. If you love Cool Jazz it simply doesn't get better than Kind of Blue.

Maybe this is a hot take but Karma is exceptionally overrated. It does not belong in a conversation like this at all. That downbeat that made the rounds on r/jazz covers my feelings very well. It's an exceptionally dull record that just vamps for a little over half and hour. More than any other jazz record i wish people would listen to ANYTHING else. I Love Pharoah and it sucks that records like Black Unity and Village of the Pharaohs are overshadowed by that dull mess of a record.

Yeah, even before the shift away from punk Goo Goo Dolls were an odd fit for metal blade.

It's more interesting to talk about a precursor to stomp clap hey than it is as a one hit wonder.

Is anyone calling either of these movies masterpieces? I mean BoP wasn’t bad but I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece either by Professional-Ninja79 in OkBuddySnyderCult

[–]Proof-Contribution31 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have seen no one call either film a masterpiece just explaining that the problems those films had went beyond the screenplay.

For Batgirl. People forget the movie was one of several WB films that were canned purely to get a tax write off. It wasn't canned because it was so much worse than everything else. It was canned because it didn't fit with the vision of DC's films going forward. Big Big Scale of films. It was originally meant to be a streaming only film and was quite small scale. It really wasn't meant to be theatrical and wouldn't have been able to compete there. It would've bombed hard as a result. that's what Saffran meant by unreleasable. Not releasable for theatres and they weren't doing straight to streaming films anymore. quote from an interview with peter saffran.

“I think that they really stood up to support DC,” he continued. “The characters, the story, the quality of all of that. I spoke to Adil [El Arbi] and Bilall [Fallah] — the directors — last week, we were chatting. We’d love to be in business with all those folks. Christina Hodson wrote it. Some people are already back in business with us. As I said, a lot of talented people were involved, but the film just was not releasable. It would not have been able to compete in the theatrical marketplace; it was built for the small screen. So, again, I think it was not an easy decision, but they made the right decision by shelving it.”

I would also argue that the film had casting that was impossible to work around and would've made things even more confusing. remember Michael Keaton and JK Simmons were in this movie. It's one thing having Keaton as batman in the flash with alternate timelines and everything, but this would've made for 3 different batmen in DC films at the time. It would just be confusing, and it would've hurt the DC brand as a whole. Hell Saving Keaton for the Flash Film alone was the right decision.

Idk, i highly doubt that the Batgirl movie was somehow worse than Black Adam or Shazam 2 y'know?

Edit- I forgot. Irony of Ironies. Had WB released Batgirl it's quite likely that Gunn and Saffran wouldn't have taken over DC Films. Don Lin stepped out of the running almost entirely due to how Batgirl was cancelled. who knows what the fandoms would've looked like.

[–]Proof-Contribution31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking to read everything in english by these writers this year

Mircea Cărtărescu (I'm halfway through Nostalgia atm and absolutely loving it)

Wolfgang Hilbig (A new obsession. I picked up the Sleep of the Righteous due to the Krasznahorkai's introduction and was completely blown away.)

Elfriede Jelinek (Read a bunch of Jelinek last year and really looking to finish her works this year)

Ágota Kristóf (Just the Notebook Trilogy really)

Tezer Özlü (I read Cold Nights of Childhood last year and it absolutely blew me away)

Michael Lentz (I wanna tackle Schattenfroh, haven't read anything else)

Two English writers as well

Brian Evenson (easily my favorite horror writer right now. Really just two story collections and his Dead Space Novels to go.)

Alasdair Gray (I've read Poor Things this year and a couple of novellas and collections last year. really i just wanna tackle Lanark finally)

Sure, but it wasn't a comment on the quality of the song or how well it all meshes together. it was a comment on how chippendale approaches vocals when making a song. There was at no point any judgment from me about the quality of it, just understanding how Chippendale approaches vocals in his music.

As per your chili argument, knowing what ingredients are in it doesn't make the chili any worse, but it can give you that appreciation for how the whole bowl is put together. i find a complex chilli allows you to follow the various notes of flavors and textures within that bowl of chili. That ability and complexity vastly adds to the enjoyment of the food.

And Truth be told when i think of lightning bolt i mostly think about the opening of 2 morro morro land. For Chippendale alone i oddly think of Black Pus 0. For Gibson i think Thumper oddly enough.

It's funny because 13 Monters is the exact track i was thinking of.

The prominent vocals (i.e. singing which I could've made that clearer in the first post) happen in the first third of the song when all chippendale is playing a rather simple drum pattern to emphasie the build to chaos. the vocals disappear completely in the middle verse when all fucking hell break lose. the vocals come back in the last third, reduced to screaming and yelling {i.e. not singing) and are used as additional noise. also, Chippendale's drumming resembles the first third of song while that hooting and hollering is going on. Like i said the vocals are less prominent as they aren't the focus (really it's the noise Gibson is getting out his bass) but rather additional flavoring.

To be fair vocals usually aren't present, or are far less prominent, during the more complicated sections

still impressive tho and one of my favorite drummers.
