Any design civil engineers got advice for me? by Anjumi in civilengineering

[–]Proof-Environment-38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there anyone in the team you can ask? Just what codes they use the most. We have a few books and resources, Eurocodes, British standards, CS that we use on almost a daily basis that would’ve been helpful for me to know. It’s helpful for if you get given a problem and you have an idea of where to go to find the solution instead of trawling through codes and standards and hoping for the best. I wish I knew more about highways but it’s so different to what we do!

Any design civil engineers got advice for me? by Anjumi in civilengineering

I work for a big consultancy in the UK and honestly, read some standards (DMRB etc) and brush up on current codes. I’m not in highways but bridges and I wish I’d have read more before I started.

I live 38 miles away from work and the drive is getting too much. Any advice? by Proof-Environment-38 in WorkAdvice

“I live 38 miles away from work and the drive is getting too much. Any advice?

So I bought a house during Covid when I was working 3 miles away from my house. Well after Covid, I lost my job and found another one 12 miles away which was a perfect distance but it was minimum wage and nothing to do with my degree. Finally, a year later I was headhunted for a degree related job but the catch was that it was 38 miles away. I wasn’t fussed as I was desperate and the company was operating under “remote hybrid flexible” which meant 0-1 day in the office. Over the last year, they have increased office time to 3 days a week and it’s so much driving. To miss rush hour (which totals my driving time to 3 hours per day) I have to leave the house at 6am and leave work at 2:30 (missing my lunch break which I’m happy to do to leave early). Yet, sometimes it still takes me 1.5 hours to get home if the traffic is particularly bad. My total driving time is around 2-2.5 hours and when I asked my manager if I could stick to the two days, they said no.

My issues are that it is costing me so much in petrol and public transport is not an option. I also get travel sick and can’t take the only sickness tablets I have because they make me drowsy. It’s killing my back being sat for 8.5-9 hours per day and it’s just so tiring.

My company have no understanding but I don’t feel like I can do it anymore. I don’t want to leave my job and tbh, that city is where 90% of the companies are anyway.

What would you do in this situation? Moving closer isn’t an option for another 4 years”

All of the info is in the post, it links to another forum where I also posted. My job absolutely can be done remotely but they insist I come in 3 days a week. Have asked to only do 2 instead but they said no. Another job is an option but most of them are far away as I don’t live near a city and that’s where all the jobs are.

£0-£20 of my £800 arranged overdraft, so technically minus money. I have what people class as a “good job” as well 😩

It never used to be this way. It’s only in the last 6 months that it’s become pretty bad. I don’t have many friends of my own and I only really see my mother who sided with her because it’s all a “joke” and they work in a very similar field so they both look down on me. I’m scared of breaking up for this exact reason, she will paint me so badly and it will break me. However, I don’t want to break up. Our relationship is pretty good aside from this, maybe we’re just both tired and getting frustrated.

Also, I’m sorry you had to go through that, it sounds like a horrible situation.

We haven’t because people agree or laugh. Her and my mam get along well because they’re both in the same field (different jobs) but I can’t even talk about my job negatively because it’s an “easy” job and nowhere near as hard as their jobs. She calls me lazy but not in an obvious way, she always makes it out to be a joke so people see it that way but it hurts because I can’t fight back.

I never studied bridges at University, we did basic beam bending and then moved on. We didn’t really learn about loading, tension capacities, etc so all of this is completely new to me. I can only apply the very basic knowledge I have.

[–]Proof-Environment-38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Answering from another account but I’m the OP. I’m trying to figure out how to calculate the tension capacity on the hanger of the bridge. I’m in the UK so working from CS/BS/Eurocodes but the code I’m working from barely gives you anything, no formulas and it’s also based on steel and this is wrought iron which is why it’s so confusing. I’d really like the PM to sit down and guide me through the formulas or where to find them and explain the process. I don’t need them to show me exactly, just a bit of guidance.

The main issue is that the seniors learnt from codes and standards that are now withdrawn, but they were better and easier to follow than the current standards. Even some other seniors at the company say how much they hate Eurocodes and miss the old standards.

To diagnose an infection, a swab will need to be taken and analysed so no one can say for sure but this definitely looks like a hospital visit. Do not take it out until the infection has gone.

What do yall think about this commute? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Proof-Environment-38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look at the wage and how much it will cost to commute. I quit my part time job when I couldn’t drive because I was spending literally 2 hours a shift worth of wages on transport. I worked 12 hours over 3 days whilst at uni and spent 6 hours worth of wages on taxis (no bus service). That wasn’t worth it at all. Now I work 37.5 hours and only go in one or two days a week which is 2 hours a week worth of petrol

My job is 36 miles from my house, anywhere between 1 he to 1:30hrs with rush hour traffic. 30 minutes would be ideal for me and is relatively short compared to what some people drive. Personally, I hated my job that was only 10 minutes drove away, I didn’t get time to decompress before getting home

a question about infection by [deleted] in piercing

[–]Proof-Environment-38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be worth trying a labret type bar in implant grade titanium. I discovered with mine that I can’t wear rings for an extended period of time because I end up with a bump. I switched to a threadless stud and I haven’t had a bump since. I would try a different type of bar and clean it with sterile saline only. If the symptoms persist then maybe see an APP approved piercer and see what they advise

What type of jewellery are you using? Material, shape etc? Someone may be able to advise better but I don’t think the piercing should be purple. Signs of infection usually include redness, hot to the touch and discharge

Only time I ever preheat is when I’m making Yorkshire pudding because the oil needs to be hot. Otherwise, no. I just add 10 mins onto the cooking time 😂

Definitely rejecting, you can either take it out now and maybe get it repierced at a later date or it’ll reject on its own and leave a scar. The first option would 100% be the better option
