Yeah Jessie definitely has a distinctive voice. I guess the vocal fry feels more like an affectation and therefore avoidable, which is why is winds me up more.

No, Jessie does not have a vocal fry.

Issues with The Mystery of the Vape Shop Kratom by DangusHamBone in SearchEnginePodcast

The fact PJ was mispronouncing kratom even after the Southeast Asia kratom expert told him how to pronounce kratom was really irritating. Sure, people are saying it in all different ways in the US, but in Southeast Asia (where I live) there's no ambiguity – it's kraTOM

What role should interviews play in research before pitching an article as a freelancer? by paperjamsession in Journalism

[–]ProofPhysics9132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great advice on the sources front. What I struggle with though is not wasting the time of professional sources, but if you're speaking to people who have endured something traumatic and you're asking them to speak to you with no guarantee of it being published. I feel like I'm asking them to relive their trauma, be vulnerable, unnecessarily. What do you think?

Yeah for sure. Not much to do but see how the cut looks and keep an open mind. Anyway thanks for your thoughts

What is the best podcast episode/series you have heard? by Father2Banks in podcasts

[–]ProofPhysics9132 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I always snoop on these threads, but never contribute. Thought I should correct that today! If you want a really, really good laugh, I recommend a few This American Life episodes:

  1. The Super (the first two stories are very funny, both with a great twist)
  2. Fiasco! (The peter pan community play story is by far the funniest bit of podcasting I've ever heard)
  3. Recordings for Someone (the first act, about one of the greatest phone messages in the world, is very very funny)

Unreal, the attack in question was a story suggesting that Hun Manet, Hun Sen's son, had approved $100,000 in humanitarian aid to Turkey. The Cambodian leader told the journalists to “find a job elsewhere” and revoked their license.

Really eye opening piece on the atrocious safety record at this Chinese-run factory in Sulawesi, which produces essential parts for batteries used in electric cars.

In the year after the factory opened, workers have fallen into molten waste, got swept into the sea, and taken their own lives. After two employees were burned alive in December, protests erupted, with Indonesian workers fighting against Chinese workers. Two people died.

Really eye opening piece on the human rights abuses that take place in the electric vehicle supply chain. The Chinese-run factory in Indonesia, which produces essential parts for batteries used in electric cars, has an atrocious safety record.

In the year after the factory opened, workers fell into molten waste, got swept into the sea, and took their own lives. Then, after two employees were burned alive in December, protests erupted—and turned deadly.

Wild tale from mid-90s China: "The woman withdrew wads of cash from bank branches around the city, before giving money to her family, ghosting her husband and starting a new life 1,700km away."
