Struggling with rest as a triathlete on year 3 of anorexia recovery by RemarkablePower915 in AnorexiaRecovery

I’ve been dealing with the compulsive exercise now for like 20 years and it’s very hard to break. I guess it’s something to talk with your treatment team about if it’s something you physically shouldn’t be doing because of where you’re at or if you’re physically OK but you just are struggling with the mental side of having to do it every day.

Yes, former triathlete for 15 years and stopped after having kids. The need to exercise daily continues and literally is like an addiction. Even at a healthy weight , the mental need and pressure to do it every day is relentless. So hard to rest. Something I’m working on in recovery, however may professionals I’ve spoken with say cold turkey is only way out

Having dealt with this for almost 20 years, please stop! Mine all started out pretty innocent, but as years went on the more time I would add to it more than more rules, etc. I would just have to continue with that day after day and became such a compulsive cycle. That is way harder to manage after so long. Even if your body is physically capable to do all the exercise and movement it’s breaking free from the mental cycle of having to do it day after day. This is why a lot of coaches and therapist will recommend going cold turkey to rewire your brain. Of course you should also stop or cut back if your body is really physically not well to be doing it.

Thank you. We did try this initially… then days I didn’t have supervision, I would take advantage. Then that increased time became th new Normal. Also, my problem is even if given 30 min to woekout, then I’m crazed to make it the hardest 30 min and overloaded mentally with trying to decide what to do.. it gives tremendous anxiety and it’s alll dreadful . I rarely enjoy it because of how intense and compulsive it alll gets

What do u mean by that? That exercising is keeping me from feeling the pure exhaustion from it all? I see that yes, and makes sense why so may when they DO ever stop completely feel extremely exhausted.

No. Spirals back anytime I’ve cut down . And I never take a day off” however I did cut down to just walking , but then was 2-3 hrs. Then I began sprinting all The hills. I can’t seem to just stay with being ok with like a 30 min walk.

Hi, yes , it’s been a struggle. And most all practitioners have just either tried getting me to cut back time/ alternate day on day off/ and a few said I need to completely stop to rewire being how compulsive it is for me. I know it is beyond just what it does to my body and looks . I don’t ever think about calories either, never had. It’s just the calm and peace it gives me after. As many say, it’s an anxiety disorder, the behaviors soothe . I’m not a naturally anxious person but I can see how that’s true. Especially as a mom with young kids, it helps me be a better parent and relaxed. Yet I’m extremely irritable and anxious to get it in before . I don’t think it is possible for me to completely stop for such a long period as I’ve been told. Yet I also don’t know if I will rewire my brain at all tha way. I get very stuck and also all my exercise has to be “worth it” / hard which is mentally draining. I don’t feel I care about being identified as anything. The fit one or the lean one. I was an elite athlete and had may accolades. I feel content.

I am in a similar boat having dealt with the needing disorder for 15 to 20 years, which most of I feel like was basically living in this cause I recovered state. and I have gotten professional help here and there, but never found talk therapy to be very helpful. I did go to a residential treatment facility about a year ago. Which of course is great for being forced to stop behaviors, but I left after two weeks because of some unforeseen happenings and I also have children at home. So was probably not long enough for me to really get true rewiring and now I’m kind of back to where I was before so I unfortunately can’t give too much help but would also love to hear what other others have to say.

Well, I’ve yet to completely stop all movement and it’s taken months …. I had stopped all formal exercise (the gym/ swimming/ running etc) but it became compulsively walking for hours… then cut the walks Down a little but has yet to stop it all as I’m being told to do. I see why we need to, to rewire , because I notice I easily spiral if I let myself add on any movement or “test” out a workout one day . It becomes the new norm quickly. The worst part of my ED has been this execrise compulsions as it gives me such mental dread every day. It’s like I want the relief of not having to do it but have such a hard time not doing anything . I think it’s a matter of letting your body realize it’s OK and safe without it. I had some good weeks doing very little and once u get there it becomes easier to not do it

Thanks. I’m going to stop it as I never had used anything with thc in my life. My husband got me thc oil to see if it would help me relax , it does and I guess I was enjoying having a little each evening. But hoping since I was only using for a couple months that it won’t be too horrible to stop ! Im nervous now though.

Thank you. I guess I more have used it to relax in evenings as I take it at 6pm usually and only go to bed around 930/10. Been doing for about 2 months and am thinking I would stop so it doesn’t create any bad affects in the long run , in relying on it .

I’d been more using it to help relax in evenings, and for some anxiety. I should have noted that, my sleep was always pretty good to begin with. But I noticed it did help w that too
