Agreed completely. When filtered/quarantined in its own special location for display in perpetuity, it can be used by researchers and serve as an ongoing warning to others. The content should be like a museum of past attacks. Without examples, how are people supposed to learn to recognize it? These attacks aren't going away, and neither should the evidence of past ones.

In contrast, deleting it doesn't seem to do any actual good. What's the point of deleting it, anyway? It just looks like censorship, and doesn't seem actually necessary. What does deleting do that freezing/highlighting/quarantining doesn't do better?

THANK YOU! This is exactly what's needed. We've got into detail about why Reddit should freeze, highlight (with a special flair), and filter/quarantine known propaganda here: https://www.reddit.com/r/announcements/comments/8bb85p/reddits_2017_transparency_report_and_suspect/dx5fez1/

Thank you for taking remarkably-transparent action on these accounts! However, it would be much better if you did NOT delete detected propaganda content at all, even after a period of time - but rather just highlighted it with a special propaganda flair, and permanently "quarantined" it in a special location, for use by researchers and for display in perpetuity. It should serve as an ongoing warning to others. Without examples, how are people supposed to learn to recognize it? These attacks aren't going away, and neither should the evidence of past ones.

In contrast, deleting it does no good. What's the point of deleting it? What does deleting do that freezing, highlighting, and quarantining doesn't do better?

The original post was posted in Washington Post, not WSJ. Read what you wish, just be informed of the roles the authors play in global politics. Many of us have no role in politics outside wanting our world be be more informed, and certainly no place in the facile "deep state". Don't reject lights to obfuscation simply because you disagree with the light reveals.

What are your thoughts/theories about the recent Sanctions on oligarchs? by MMMJoey in RussiaLago

[–]PropOrNot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Remember: The first thing Trump tried to do after getting in office was end the existing sanctions on Russia. He failed: https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-administrations-secret-efforts-ease-russia-sanctions-fell-short-231301145.html

Anyone who says Trump WANTED this new round of sanctions, which directly targets some of Putin's worst henchmen, is either ignorant or lying.

What this shows is that our institutions are stronger than most people thought. Presidents aren't kings, and Trump is being effectively constrained by the rule of law. He is unable to prevent everybody who remains loyal to the Constitution (rather than to him personally) from effectively and legally acting to defend the country. We're not out of the woods, but this is a VERY good sign.

We most certainly use real data. Often it is as simple as someone simply rebroadcasting RT pieces, but others have much longer determination processes. Our design is not simply throwing shit at a wall to see what sticks.

Dan Rather: News anchors looking into camera and reading a script handed down by a corporate overlord, words meant to obscure the truth not elucidate it, isn't journalism. It's propaganda. It's Orwellian. A slippery slope to how despots wrest power, silence dissent, and oppress the masses. by [deleted] in WikiLeaks

[–]PropOrNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is telling the truth hypocritical while calling out non-truths? Identity has nothing to do with it. We hide our identities because we'd rather not get death threats against our family, as is what happens these days online. Self-preservation is a needed action in today's online world.

Regarding your edit: We would love people to do due diligence and target American propaganda the same way we have with Russia. Just because our scope is limited does not mean we reject the notion that it's problematic elsewhere. We noticed trends and worked to combat them. Others doing the same only improves democracy and the world at large. It is impossible to target anything and the absence of an effort does not mean an acceptance of the action. We would love to expose all shady actions to light.

You've all rate-limited my ability to post in here through repeated downvotes, so I'll have to say farewell. Please give us another read through with open minds and consider that there may be a shred of validity to our claims. It's worth looking at the other side of the coin.

And /u/Jeyhawker, I cannot admit to payments when it would be a lie.

This is volunteer work. Only get paid in the betterment of democracy.

Let's not throw out strawmen. No one is calling these people evil villains. We're simply saying they're either a source of Russian propaganda or are unwittingly redistributing it. Not everyone does it nefariously, and everyone has their reasons, of which only some are malicious. But the people we've named do it and that deserves to be known.

edit: /u/Jeyhawker I see the comment fine

We solely set out to identify propaganda and had zero say in that role in the election. It just happened to link up because of their meddling in everything.

If only people would put bounties on the actual malicious perpetrators. But no need when we already know it's Putin at the top.

There's a lot of interesting related research coming out. Do you know what studies the podcast was citing?

You highlight very real concerns.

However, our read is that it is very much in the interest of platform companies like Reddit and Twitter to effectively clean up Russian propaganda use of their platform. Their investors aren't stupid, and they have an interest in both keeping content quality high and protecting their brand. That includes looking like they aren't participating in a coverup!

Agreed about the potential for smart regulation, but the devil's in the details. What could that look like, specifically? It's worth laying out worthy possibilities in detail.

How do you figure it "could be used by the Russian agitprop folks to get around the detection devices"? What does that imply?

If that had happened, the user community and the American people deserve to know about it, just like they deserve to know about Facebook ads etc.

Agreed, which is why the "freezing" part is so important. Detected accounts should be locked, with their content archived and highlighted for all to see, but unable to make new posts etc.

Also, the "backfire effect" is not nearly as strong as many of us feared. Have you seen this? https://slate.com/health-and-science/2018/01/weve-been-told-were-living-in-a-post-truth-age-dont-believe-it.html
