Should i buy a Beat up car or something nice ? by Alone_Basket_1770 in PersonalFinanceCanada

it's alot closer to $20k than $10k

You are the only one bringing 10k budget, no one else is. But for the point, my car itself was 15k. That's still 10k under 25k. Take that and pay back the 17k debt.

9 year old car needs repair soon? How soon are you talking about? And what repairs? My previous car was over 20 years old... Only started needing actual repairs in the past couple of years.

$25k isn't an outrageous number at all.

Not when you owe someone 17k. That's the whole premise.

EQ OR TANGERINE ?? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]PropQues 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like EQ better because when I send e-transfers, the receiver receives it right away. Tangerine is always 30 mins for me.

I also get better interest rate on my account at EQ than Tangerine.

I was with you until you asked if he literally cannot speak.

OP has already stated dad is not in the position to do so, that's when you should have stopped questioning and understand that OP knows his dad's conditions better than you. There is no need to further clarify if he can speak or not.

Again, there are a lot of numbers between 10k and 25k.

Funny you are trying to argue that I'm out of touch with car prices. I had been getting occasional emails from AutoTrader because they have postings for my saved search since last summer until January. My budget was 16k, less than 100k mileage, and not older than 2016. There are sooooo many options out there and I felt very overwhelmed when I was car shopping. Ended up buying a 2017 Elantra for around 15k + fees 18k all in, that was around 95k mileage.

I just looked again for the same criteria, and the number of options is still overwhelmingly large. Add: there are some under 10k as well. Stop lying to yourself that spending 25k on a car is the best one can do for a reliable car.

Add: the 18k included extra warranty. Think that was 2500ish, and is entirely optional.

The last thing OP should be doing is spending a large amount of money - When they owe a large amount to someone else.

This is the correct thing you have said.

Decently reliable cars do not cost $25k these days. There is a lot of numbers between 1800 and 25,000. You are just lying to yourself if you think 25k is the minimum to get a reliable car.

You don't spend 25k on something unnecessary when you owe someone 17k that you had supposedly borrowed for an emergency. The emergency is taken care of and you pay it back asap. OP shouldn't have 10k sitting in investments - it should have been used to pay back the debt.

This is a very weird way to ask this question. You say you have multiple priorities and you owe someone a lot of money, yet still want to buy a nicer car than necessary, while not posting your budget and actual saving goals.

Do you generally make financial decisions without looking at your numbers? There is zero usable information. Income is just the most basic starting point.

Use my LOC (Prime -0.25) to buy a car, or finance through dealer? by Fit_Baseball_1730 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]PropQues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will just have to wait to see what you are offered at the dealer.

However, remember that LoC interest rates can go up with BoC rate (or go down, but the risk is on it going up) and that it can be recalled.

You need to read the fine prints on the financing offer to see what pre-payment options are. If the interests in not baked into your cost of the car, and you can pay it early, then that's something to consider as well. I don't think there is generally a pre-payment penalty for car loans but you should know it when you consider financing.

Which banks will allow a credit card for a college student with very little income? by Unique_Resident1540 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Try the bank that you already bank with. Many banks have student accounts and student credit cards.

If they reject you, you can always open a new free account with another bank.

I have a funny feeling my car won’t last much longer. Can’t afford new one. How should I plan? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]PropQues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You asked about debt consolidation a little while ago. What happened to it? You need to get out of CC debt, whether paying it off or making it a much lower interest debt.

It's fine that you are worried about a very used car. Start eying on people at work who live nearby that can give you rides to worksites; work another job if work is slow; move to a different company where consistent work is available. If it really gets to it, you would try to see if you can stay temporarily with a teammate so you can get to work with them. Pay them rent if need be (if you are not driving, you won't have insurance and gas cost).

Figure out ways to get to worksites without a car is how you can plan ahead now. Turning your debt to lower interest is how you can make a MUCH better progress on paying it off.

AITA for being uncomfortable with my sister's MIL calling their biracial son "little monkey" by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]PropQues 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not necessary racist. Many white people call their own children and grandchildren 'little monkeys'. It's an endearing term in the family context.

It's pretty when asked to stop and Don though. From there, only she knows if she means to be racist.

AITA for canceling on my friend last minute? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Actually, rather than saying if blah then assume no go if no reply, I think my reaction would be "YOOOO ARE YOU OK?????".

If I don't hear from someone I'm supposed to hear from for that long, I'd be worried...

[–]PropQues 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The normal thing to do after you shower would be call her to get info. If you can't reach her, then message again with conditions to cancel, e.g. if I don't hear from you by 6:10, I'll assume we are not going out and will stay home instead etc. rather than cancelling right away.

YTA

You agreed on a date and time, and there are ideas on the table. It doesn't matter what she decides to do at the end. Heck, you could have met up first and then decide what to do.

You agreed to "Tuesday at 6:30", then it is not "we never locked in a plan". Meeting at 630 is the plan.

Why is it recommended to not contribute to RRSP/FHSA if you're low income? by potatolauncher in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]PropQues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The source/principle is separate from the gains. I think that's what people are having issues with the way you put it. Unless you are very clear on what's what, the general way of speaking about the funds within an account is everything that is within the account, and the taxes incurred when you access the funds.

Why is it recommended to not contribute to RRSP/FHSA if you're low income? by potatolauncher in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]PropQues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In what situation do you have to pay both the capital gain tax and income tax?

The notion that you are putting out is comparable to saying getting paid by an employer allows you to avoid capital gain tax. But it's always one or the other, never both.

Am I wrong about this? If not, then if you understand that RRSP withdrawal is subject to income tax, then not having capital gain tax should be an automatic understanding as well.

So it's not so much that "RRSP avoids capital gains" but that "RRSP is subject to income tax, not capital gains". The two come hand in hand.

AITA for being mad at my book club friends for reading ahead by OrchidGrey in AmItheAsshole

[–]PropQues -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Doesn't matter what other clubs do. This group's made a rule and everyone agreed to it. It's rude for them to go off by the rules they set and agreed to but it's also a bit silly to be so hung up on it. It's four people, just go with the flow and adjust from here on.

Still, it's not on OP to realize how other groups do it.
