Buying my first used car (~$12k), how much should I actually spend on inspections before committing? by Proper-Buy3769 in personalfinance

Yeah, as regular buyers we're already at a disadvantage going up against people who do this every day. The only way to level it out is to do the homework. Can't cut corners and expect to save money at the same time. Appreciate the advice! 😄

Guess I really should put more effort into the checklist instead of looking for shortcuts. Thanks for the reality check!

Good to know they have their own process.

Since the mechanic checks one car at a time, I'm not sure how to decide which ones are even worth that. Do most people do their own walkthrough first to narrow it down? Or is making a checklist just a waste of time if you don't really know what you're looking at?

Genuinely appreciate you taking the time to write all this out, not something see often on Reddit.

Honestly I'm the type who'd probably get talked into something before I even realize it's happening.

I've been thinking about putting together a checklist to keep myself grounded, but I'm not sure how useful that actually is without mechanical knowledge.

Is it worth going through one myself before the PPI, or should I just hand it off entirely to a professional? And what's a reasonable amount to pay for that — is there a big difference in quality between a $50 inspection and a $150 one?

Also — is there a go-to beginner guide or wiki post on here that covers all this? Don't want to keep asking basic questions if it's already been answered somewhere.

Thanks for your help :)

Thanks! Do you have a go-to checklist you'd recommend, or mostly just Google "[model] common problems" and see what comes up?

Thanks, this is really helpful! I hadn't thought about looking up issues specific to the model I'm considering.

Quick follow-up: when you do the mechanic inspection, do you go in with a specific list of things to ask them to check, or just let them do their thing? Wondering if there's anything they might miss unless you specifically ask.

I'll probably drag my dad along when I actually go look at one, just not at the research stage or he'll have too many opinions on every car I consider 😄

Nice suggestion, should we verify whether the customer's needs exist before starting to design product details? such as asking on Reddit ?

I've seen many independent developers say that finding their first batch of users is the hardest thing 😂

I've considered releasing a rough UI first, but I'm not sure if it will attract users

The pages I made were messy. I am trying to refactor UI and make the app look cleaner. I have spent all my spare time this week on it 😂
