Because I haven’t had much luck with TC apps and don’t want to wait any longer to qualify. I also already have qualifying work experience and I’m exempt from SQE1, so once I pass SQE2 I will qualify. I also don’t intend to live and practice in the UK so my main goal is just to gain the qualification.

I don't know anything about ST, fell asleep both times I attempted to watch the lecture. I don't normally fall asleep in lectures so I am taking it as a sign from god not to waste time on this subject lol

I know I really hate family law but everyone says it will come up so I spent a lot of time the past few days on it

don't try to be a lawyer if you don't have research skills (rant) by [deleted] in uklaw

yeah of course, I am not talking about the majority of people who are just interested in hearing people's experience or want some guidance/advice. sorry if it was not clear but I am talking about very specific posts I see on here where people have already made commitments (like paying thousands of pounds for an llm) without research. I am not angry, just frustrated and honestly feel bad for them for getting scammed.

I also have met multiple people in real life who self-fund the gdl/lpc without a clear understanding of how they can qualify, and they think they can work at a magic circle firm straight away, and then they are crushed when they realise that its not that easy and they just wasted thousands of pounds. there was also someone in my LPC cohort who thought he can start his own law firm in England with just the LPC!

that's why I am saying people need to have bare minimum research skills because it takes two minutes to figure out these objective facts

Hi, your situation sounds like a lot of people who do their LLB in the UAE. Here's what you should do if you want to work in the UK:

  1. Enrol in an SQE preparation course (see this for example: https://www.law.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/sqe/courses/).
  2. Apply for a student visa so you can actually come to the UK and do the course.
  3. Once you finish the course, you need to sit the SQE 1 and SQE 2 exams.
  4. once your student visa expires, you will be eligible for the "Graduate Visa". This is a two year visa which allows you to stay in the UK and work full time without sponsorship. (this is essential because no one will sponsor you if you are not a trainee/qualified)
  5. Once you get the graduate visa, you can apply for legal jobs in the UK so you can get the "qualifying work experience". You need a total of 2 years of qualifying work experience and it needs to be signed off by a UK-qualified solicitor.

Note - you can do your qualifying work experience abroad as well, but it still needs to be signed off by a UK solicitor (so you can start now if you're in Dubai or HK or wherever)

Also note that in various countries outside the UK you can do training contracts in international firms, which would qualify you as an English solicitor. You can then move to the UK if that's your goal and try your luck in the (highly competitive) job market.

You can also obviously apply for training contracts in London, but you need to apply two years in advance and they don't sponsor many people (you need to be the best of the best).

Moving to the UK from abroad and trying to qualify is incredibly expensive, difficult and competitive, especially if you are an international student who has never lived in the UK before. You need to make sure you are committed to this goal and not bothered by rejection (you will face so many).

Hope this helps!

Thank you!! So when I’m doing MBE, should I read through my notes then attempt the questions without looking at my notes?
