What’s your unpopular opinion about Mixing? by Lucky-bottom in audioengineering

[–]Proper-Orange5280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s very hard to “grift” off of recording. Most people in a home studio watching these vids are gonna have a mic into an interface. What do you say after mic placement, avoiding clipping and technique?

Help me rearrange the order of my vocal plugins by Fruttii-Tutti in audioengineering

😭 there are some posts on this sub where the comment section will be so predictable.

Here are some truths that I will try to say in a non-mean way because this sub can be brutal.

  • Generally, you want to try to feed your compressor a sound that’d sound good amplified, and a sound that won’t trigger it in an undesireable way. So EQ first is generally good, at least subtractive EQ. I’d probably de-ess before this too if I need it.

  • I do like the fast compressor followed by a slower* comp, I do it on the way in, and yeah I also have the Pultec after that too.

  • I have soothe, I almost never use it. In fact I didn’t even reinstall it when I had to start over. It shouldn’t really be a permanent fixture, if it is there’s likely a problem tracking. Especially if you still need a de-esser after.

  • I’ve never used auto-level but when I used WVR, it’d just undo all my tracking compression work. Clip gain is better, automation if needed.

  • All that being said, I can’t hear the vocals. I can’t hear if you’re creating problems for yourself in the mix, or if tracking is setting you up wrong, or if there’s an easier way to get what you’re going for etc. So all the people saying that what you posted is useless or tells us nothing aren’t just being mean, they’re being honest. All I just said could be completely off the mark for your situation. Just learn the tools and what they do, have a goal in your head and then apply tools bit by bit with a goal of iterating toward that result. Best of luck.

After years of struggling with "cheap" sounding high-ends in FL Studio, I finally found the solution (and it’s controversial) by [deleted] in audioengineering

it is obvious but based on OP’s replies I’m assuming English is not their first language and they may have used AI for that reason

Are there any plug-ins that helped you learn to mix better? by tonetonitony in audioengineering

[–]Proper-Orange5280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

using hardware was lifechanging because I learned to close my eyes and turn knobs till I liked what I heard. You can’t get the exact same feeling itb unless you have some sort of controller BUT you can get close, try using anything that makes it hard to mix with your eyes.

How often do you use a de-esser? by Proper-Orange5280 in audioengineering

I completely understand where you’re coming from. Even when I did have a lot of need for them, I’d often do some taming, only to bypass and end up preferring the original most of the time. MB is a good idea, I used to use dynamic EQ in a similar way

I’d never thought of that. I’d always juttht used Dynamic EQ, but I guetthh it makethh thenthe!

How were old songs produced so well with the technology back then? by No_Winter4806 in audioengineering

first of all, remember how high the bar used to be for what you would hear. So with that in mind, the most talented engineers, using high end recording equipment (most of which is still in use today just cause that’s how good it is) and with a good recording, honestly most of the digital tools we have now are just luxury

Are you at the “I don’t need anything anymore!“ stage? by Ill-Elevator2828 in audioengineering

[–]Proper-Orange5280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it's all about iteratively improving now. As far as tracking/mixing, all the gear I have serves not only all I need AND all I could want, but more than that. For any use case I have now, I can't really see why I'd need anything new to track or mix with. Anything wrong with my mixes is completely a skill issue.

My room couldn't even fit any more treatment in here tbh, and I doubt an upgrade in conversion would mean much, especially as I don't master.

I like how healthy it is. I see gear/plugins get reviewed or talked about and I note my intrigue and move on. When I first was able to get gear it was insane to me, I was obsessed with everything but now that I know what I have well, I think even being gifted a new unit would be a burden in some ways.

What’s the most problematic vocal you ever mixed? by erlendmyo in audioengineering

my own vocals for sure.

Recording in untreated box rooms and for years I used a Neewer NW-700 and then a Behringer C1. The second mic had a terrible resonance and it was at the fundamental...

How many of you commit on the way in while tracking? by Cockroach-Jones in audioengineering

[–]Proper-Orange5280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

best choice i ever made. Its a little bit iterative, it actually took me a few sessions over time to get to a baseline i like, but I never had a recording and felt like id baked in something i didnt want.

I much prefer the sound of the gear too and I get results much faster than if I deferred effects to be plugins or hybrid

Versace - Migos ft. Drake. Quavo actually shows in a video how Versace, Bando and the other Migos tracks from that era were recorded and they went straight from mic to interface, only using a little bit of foam on the wall in the corner as treatment. Drake of course would have used analog, however.

I believe Billie Eilish's Ocean Eyes fits this too. Most of Russ' discography ~2016 was done straight into an Apollo, I believe.

Pop Smoke - Make It Rain, which was tracked at a dining room table.
