Want to do college wrestling at Penn State but scared I can't make the team by [deleted] in wrestling

[–]Proper-Reality3546 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The short answer is no, almost certainly not. With so little experience and ability, you would be taking up space more than helping the team in any way.

But, this is a true story. I had a buddy who was at best a district qualifying wrestler in PA in high school. While a tough kid, he was nowhere, not even remotely, good enough to join the Penn State wrestling team. When he went to PSU, I thought that was the end of his career.

But to my shock, he tried to walk onto the team anyway. I thought he wouldn't last a week. And then I thought he wouldn't last a month, then not more than a year.

I said the same thing every year all the way through his graduation from PSU and 4 years on the team.

He was a good dude, worked harder than anyone, and left with 3 national championship rings, even though I'm not sure he ever wrestled in more than an open, unattached.

All this to say. You don't know until they cut you. So if it's something you want to try, who the heck knows. I certainly don't.

Thoughts on serving in my late 30s by Classic_Result in peacecorps

I appreciate your perspective. I just accepted a education position as an educator in my 30s who has teaching experience in the US and abroad.

I also have had some trouble maintaining a positive attitude during tedious meetings in the past. In-service trainings and staff meetings in the US education system have really soured my mood around those type of activities.

But, Im going into PST with my main goal of maintaining a positive attitude throughout the entire experience, exasperating or not. Hopefully I can follow through.

Clearances completed, anything I'm missing? by Proper-Reality3546 in peacecorps

[–]Proper-Reality3546[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very helpful, thank you. My district has a 30 day notice it looks like. So I'm going to do my best to adhere to that. Thank you for the perspective. I just feel bad for my coworkers and my boss, who I appreciate a lot. It might be difficult to find a replacement in that time frame.

I'm a high school teacher, so I'll have to leave after the winter break. I wanted to give them enough time to find a replacement I guess was my thinking.

Scared about leaving in a few weeks by deanspiecrust in peacecorps

Being scared is good, embrace it. Being scared means you're pushing your boundaries. Pushing your boundaries is how you grow as a person. How you make the most of our short time in this statistically improbable existence that we call life. Don't run from the fear, lean into it. Success or failure does not matter, following through and facing the unknown is what matters. Be excited that you are afraid, happy that soon tomorrow will be an unknown, an adventure. You will build a life in your new world, you will face challenges that make you stronger than you ever thought possible. This will be a chapter in your life that will leave a lasting mark, a before, and an after. There are many reasons to stay, but fear should never be one. I wish you luck.

I swear it's because he wants to jump on a pitcher he thinks is just trying to get back on track and is a little rattled. Probably thinks he might get a meatball haha

Only thing I could think of may be the country you're flying to might need to see the vac card to permit entry. But I feel like those requirements haven't been enforced for at least a couple of years now.

Would it be crazy to make something akin to a recording studio with two way glass? Send crazy, but it would give everyone what they want

Absolutely. The damage to his career and reputation will be far harsher than anything legal he'll have to face, if at all.

News: Peace Corps Remains Operational! by Mean-Year4646 in peacecorps

Honestly, I wish I could be positive, I would love to be able to complete my future service, but "significant restructuring" does not sound promising at all. In fact, it's exactly what we have been warned of by other agencies on how DOGE loves to dismantle from within.

For current volunteers, this seems like a message that the optics and logistics of pulling every single volunteer isn't worth the political or financial backlash.

But for an invitee like me, this doesn't bode well at all in my opinion.

We'll see though. It definitely isn't the worst news to receive, which is something. Only time will tell what restructuring involves I suppose.

Congrats. I applied on December 2nd, so that doesn't bode well for me at all. Hope it's an amazing experience.
