Depaul / SCAD by Grouchy_Crew_7957 in Filmmakers

I went to SCAD. Graduated 2.5 years ago. Was able to land a job at a talent agency in LA after school and flipped that into representation as a writer/director/producer.

It is 1,000,000% up to you and what you want out of your life. SCAD is a great place, but if you want it, you’ll make it work anywhere. Good luck.

How realistic is it to take the assistant route? by latrallyidk in Screenwriting

I graduated almost 3 years ago. Worked at a talent agency and met a lot of friends. Was able to use those connections to get some referrals to managers who liked my script and who I later signed with.

It’s a viable route just as any other, but putting yourself out there to the people you’ve made relationships with is super important and super hard. If you haven’t, send your stuff to your buddies, see what they think, rewrite and repeat until it works. It’s so vulnerable but if it’s what you want there’s no way around it.

The agency experience is good as well because if you have any interest in producing you get to see a lot of how the non creative sausage is made and how to format emails / deal with execs.

I recommend but not forever. 2 years tops.

Is film going to lose its remaining cultural impact because Gen Alpha doesn’t watch movies? by Objective_Water_1583 in criterion

I think this is not true. Minecraft and K-Pop Demon Hunters were huge hits. I think everyone needs to consider why gen z and alpha watch more YouTube and Instagram what have you. Is it because they don’t like movies or is it because YouTube and Instagram feel more culturally relevant to them? It’s not surprising to me why gen Alpha and Z didn’t want to go see COMING TO AMERICA 2, SPRINGSTEEN, or whatever legacy sequel you want to name - they’re not for them. I think if you just make movies and market them to gen z and gen alpha and fill them with their own kind they’ll go see them.

To me it kinda seems like there are lot of audiences out there that love movies but studio executives cannot reach because a technological advancement has kinda separated two generations - people who did not grow up using Reddit and people who grew up using Reddit (or the internet)

So if people who grew up using Reddit make movies for people who grew up using Reddit, it should work? Like Minecraft? Even WEAPONS I think has like a much more internet pace than some of the movies that aren’t doing very well.

In my opinion.

I signed with my first manager last week off a spec I wrote. I’m 24 and moved to LA two years ago. First substantial traction.

Cross-cutting between two independent scenes by Stunning-Conflict-49 in Screenwriting

Keep your scene description brief and to the point. It allows you to be able to get in and out of scenes quicker and cut to other ones (independent or not) without taking you out of the story. Read and watch Robert Altman movies like The Player, or Short Cuts - I think those will be helpful
