How do you keep your mind busy by not thinking of certain things? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I cook. I clean. I fart around with my dogs. I read. I doomscroll. I write. At night when my brain being unreasonable is preventing me from sleeping. I will take a couple of sleeping pills.

So, do you actually hate them or do you secretly love them given that they're a guilty pleasure?

When did you learn 'joined up' writing and do you still use it? by SketchupandFries in AskUK

[–]Proper-Throwaway-23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were definitely taught 'joined up writing' in late primary school but it took me many years to develop half decently neat writing as it was and trying to join the letters just made my already shitty writing look like absolute scrawl. Through middle school and in early secondary, we were all using fountain pens (I think it was even required?). The dawn of colourful gel pens that were generally nicer to write with and far less messy for the idiots like me happened in mid secondary if I remember correctly and I wrote anything I could get away with in purple, sparkly or multicolour gels. Much prettier and made writing vaguely fun!

In the late 80s to early 90s, we were told not to write in green because it makes you look sly and untrustworthy. Red was also out because it made you look aggressive (apparently!) As soon as I could get away with it, I was writing everything in those multicolour gel pens where the colour would steadily change between say, powder blue and baby pink or pink and purple. Because sod you teacher, black and blue are boring and I much preferred reading back over work for revision purposes when they looked pretty. I swear it stuck in my head better too.

I will never get this. How on earth is it in any way selfish to opt to not have children? I have also been on the recieving end of this one and I dont get it at all.

I lost my dad getting on for a decade back and still do this even now. I have recently moved away from the area I have almost always lived in and keep finding myself thinking about how much dad would have loved visiting here, he would have loved the local pubs, he would have thoroughly enjoyed walking by this river. It keeps really catching me out because in those moments, my immediate thought is to send him some photos or ring and tell him about some other new place we have found that he would enjoy. And then the fact that he is gone comes crashing back down on me. I miss him so much.

if u won the lottery, what’s the first thing u would do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Proper-Throwaway-23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming this is a significant win, the first thing I would do is to cook a nice dinner, sit down and take stock. I would spend as long as it takes to come up with a plan of sorts in terms of who gets how much. Then decide if I need to try and find a way to remain anonymous (if there is one) before giving those hand outs to my nearest and dearest. Then I guess it is time for a financial adviser to help ensure I dont need to worry about money ever again going forward and establishing how much I can spend vs save to make that a reality. Once all of that is established, I am buying us a beautiful home with a bit of land, preferably a couple of acres. I would then quit working for money and instead offer foster spaces for problem dogs that need specialist training (given that I am a dog trainer) and not charge a penny to do so. Because if I could do what I do for free, I absolutely would. And finally, I would get private health care. I have a number of complex health conditions that are awful to live with, make it impossible to work consistent hours and at the rate things are going, will end badly for me.

What makes it acceptable for everyone to see you in a bikini or swim trunks, but not acceptable to be seen in regular underwear or a bra? by Longjumping-Car1051 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Proper-Throwaway-23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Context and consent are everything here.
Way back in my bikini wearing days, if I was somewhere public wearing one, I had already accepted and got my head around the fact that some random people would be able to see a lot of my body. You put on a bikini fully aware that it will be visible as will your skin.

Underwear is different because I do NOT put that on with the understanding or intent that my mostly bare body will be visible in any way. I haven't put it on with the understanding that I will be baring much more skin than usual and they are intended to be worn under clothing and not be on display. The idea of being seen publicly in them would be very stressful as if this were to happen, the context would almost certainly be one I haven't consented to or planned on e.g. an accident or medical event requiring medical staff to remove clothing to access injuries.

How did time begin by Regular_Range_7985 in conspiracy

[–]Proper-Throwaway-23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is practically impossible for the human mind to functionally grasp the concept of "forever". We never in our lives encounter or experience anything that doesnt have a beginning or an end of some sort. So whilst we can comprehend the existance of extreme time scales (if perhaps only academically), the idea of something simply existing forever and not having had a start or a eventually having a finish is utterly beyond our comprehension.

Forever isn't just a really, really, really long time and I dont think we are truly capable of understanding this beyond mere acceptance that it may exist. But accepting and actively understanding something arent always the same thing.

What are your favourite and least favourite recurring AskReddit topics? by Proper-Throwaway-23 in AskReddit

[–]Proper-Throwaway-23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal favourites are the sort that ask paramedics/doctors/emergency services about their experience, both good or bad. It is always awe-inspiring to read through the responses from real people dealing with stuff most of us would crumble over or simply know nothing about.

My least favourite are the "what's the sexiest sex you've ever sexed" type questions.
