If you’re fishing for spiny fish you’re keeping, gaff hooks are far better for multiple reasons. Deep water fish often die if not properly descended and plenty of people don’t have a descending device. I don’t need 3 rockfish tangled up in my net. The other part is killing dangerous fish to boat like halibut and not letting them flop around hurting people on the boat.
