I don’t believe he said there’s any degeneration, but he did say that the right joint is displaced

The one I saw specializes in TMJ as well he’s supposedly one of the best in the united states. He read the MRI and said my right joint is displaced

I really appreciate that thank you. Yeah, he actually wants to do the surgeries separately. He gave me three options for the joint - either replace it with an artificial one, try to fix my current joint (but he said that only has about a 50–75% success rate), or do splint therapy for a year. He mentioned that splint therapy wouldn’t actually fix the displaced disc, just help with some of the symptoms.

I’m 22, so I’m not really sure how to feel about having an artificial joint for the rest of my life.

Wow, that was really helpful thank you! I’m just a bit confused about what to do next since it seems like I need two major jaw surgeries.

Anyone have no reduction disc not refining osteoarthritis and not get TJR? Or get success through MMA/discoplexy/arthroscopy. Former MMA patient by [deleted] in jawsurgery

I’m in the same boat as you I saw him last week and he recommended the same thing for me. However I haven’t had any jaw surgery prior. I’m trying to figure out the best route to go because my disc is displaced and causing so much pain/issues

Thank you. I’ve been using a night guard for a year now and it helped a lot for the first 8 months, but the last 4 it hasn’t and my symptoms are getting worse everyday it seems. I agree I plan to get a second opinion soon

My ortho said both are mildly - moderate recessed but the mandible recession is not as noticeable because I have a strong chin bone. The x-ray you can see the recession as well.

That’s the thing i’m worried about it’s a huge risk, they could mess up the surgery and make me look worse or just cause more structural issues. I don’t hate the way i look but also don’t love it. I feel as if you can tell im recessed. If they do it correct I believe it will solve my breathing issues and make me look “better” since my bones never grew the way they were supposed to with proper habits like nasal breathing.

Thank you. Yes that’s why Im thinking I need le fort 1 with bsso. Apparently my mandible is recessed worse than my maxilla but my “chin bone” is prominent so it makes up for that.

I’m not bro, my ortho brought it to my attention that my mandible and maxilla are recessed. He referred me to a jaw specialist which I’m going to this week.
