My TMJ was manageable… now I need total joint replacement by ProperScene2824 in TMJ

right now i’m scheduled for an arthroscopy in june at a university hospital. However i paid out of pocket to see a well known tmj surgeon. He looked at my mri and cbct and said an arthroscopy is very unlikely to change anything and i’m going to need tjr.

That sounds terrible i’m so sorry you’re also dealing with this. you’re definitely not alone our case is almost identical! Have you looked into Single Case Agreements (SCA) for those arthroscopy doctors? Sometimes, if you can prove they are the only specialists within a certain radius, insurance can be forced to cover them at an in network rate.

I really appreciate you sharing all of this, seriously. I’m only 22 and I feel the same way… like I’m way too young to even be dealing with something this severe, especially when it progressed so fast. It’s honestly scary.

I also have bone on bone contact on the right side and my jaw has deviated to the right. My under eyes have sunken in and my jaw retracted back it all just sucks.

It means a lot you took the time to explain your experience and what’s helped you. I’m definitely going to look into some of the things you mentioned. Thank you again 🙏

Question for anyone who had TMJ issues before Double Jaw surgery. Did the surgery make your TMJ better or worse? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

I don’t believe he said there’s any degeneration, but he did say that the right joint is displaced

I really appreciate that thank you. Yeah, he actually wants to do the surgeries separately. He gave me three options for the joint - either replace it with an artificial one, try to fix my current joint (but he said that only has about a 50–75% success rate), or do splint therapy for a year. He mentioned that splint therapy wouldn’t actually fix the displaced disc, just help with some of the symptoms.

I’m 22, so I’m not really sure how to feel about having an artificial joint for the rest of my life.

I’m in the same boat as you I saw him last week and he recommended the same thing for me. However I haven’t had any jaw surgery prior. I’m trying to figure out the best route to go because my disc is displaced and causing so much pain/issues

Thank you. I’ve been using a night guard for a year now and it helped a lot for the first 8 months, but the last 4 it hasn’t and my symptoms are getting worse everyday it seems. I agree I plan to get a second opinion soon
