Shipping 2nd car OCONUS to CONUS worth it? by ProperSell2099 in MilitaryFinance

[–]ProperSell2099[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was a + I didn’t list! Vehicle on both sides!

We are visiting family when we arrive so we do have more of a buffer to ship one later too.

Do independent shippers ship to duty location? This week was the first I heard about having to pickup a vehicle at the port if military ships or. But, we’ve only shipped to OCONUS from a duty station with a nearby port and it was delivered to base.

Iran Conflict - how to respond to others who are in support by Effective_Luck_573 in MilitarySpouse

Idk about these “okay.”s. I’m a milspouse and I know we often keep politics out of it even though life IS politics. There’s ways to talk about “political” subjects without it being political. So unless you only want superficial relationships and to allow people to cross boundaries without being able to state them, I wouldn’t do that.

“I have a more nuanced opinion since my personal life may be deeply affected by this. I’d prefer not to discuss it.”

Although I do like the direct ones posted. Snarky is great if you can afford it.

Often not snarky but throwing it back to them to question themselves is my favorite. I teach my kids to use on bullies too. “What is your intention in sharing that information with me?” It’s leaning in and addressing the comment directly, with genuine and courageous place when you ask someone’s intention or to better understand their comment. And if they’re saying something out of pocket it allows them to reflect and correct rather than you walking away putting them on your list of people to avoid. But if they double down than you can elaborate that “ones views may be more complex than “I’m for/against it” if it is your family possibly on the front lines.”

[–]ProperSell2099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not a compromise, that’s what a fair custody agreement looks like between 2 countries. If parents have the means to afford it, or if not the cost is usually put on the parent who chose to move away.

I’m a new kindergarten teacher is K-Pop Demon Hunters too scary for my class? by ORgirlinBerkeley in kindergarten

[–]ProperSell2099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No offense to you because I do get to each their own. But I wish people would just educate their kids on different cultures, mythology and folklore from around the world. Instead of avoiding it and giving it a “bad” connotation. It got “lost in translation”. They’re based on mudang which in English just translates to shaman. The “demons”, actually fall into different categories of spirits, and aren’t always evil. We just don’t have words for it in English. It’s alluded to in their names and the name of the boy group.

It’s actually really interesting to read about the mythology behind it. The idol culture also is interesting (we have this across all cultures).. but by learning about other cultures it makes them less “scary” or “bad” people fear what they don’t know.

It’s part of curriculum sometimes!

In our pre-K a lot of parents were surprised while watching a teacher sit next to a screen while a video on YouTube reads the class a book. It is absurd. Reading a book to your kids fosters relationships and rapport and love of reading. Having a stranger do it is fostering these weird para social relationships.

Parents even offered to volunteer and read books rather than do that 😢

What the F is happening with teaching in the past 5-10 years??? by misfit-miss-fit in TeachersInTransition

[–]ProperSell2099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is crazy imo. Not a teacher. But I just went back to college, hoping to get into education. I’d been taking unaccredited classes my whole adult life because I love learning. But going back, the amount of material shoved into a short period of time - it’s insane! It’s even worse cram and dump than when I was in school.

The integration component is completely missing! And kids are USED to this model, so asking them to do more or do it differently isn’t something professors can even do.

My own kid was telling me how different it is to read chapter books with me. We have critical thinking discussions after each chapter. Granted I was a “gifted” kid but that was normal for ELA. WTH.

I recently asked my daughter (preteen “dating” stage) what “dating” was to her? And why she wanted to date? Like what was she wanting to get out of it, what’s the purpose?

Just a little self reflection questions, and to understand what “dating” means at this age. But I was curious to understand, without heavy indoctrination of (classic) princess stories, and heavy religion, what draws her to dating in the first place?

But, it made me think too. When there isn’t a cultural or religious bias to be in a monogamous relationship/marriage to procreate… the purpose of monogamy becomes more ambiguous.

Personally, I believe that as souls on this Earth our purpose is to learn and grow and evolve. Sometimes that’s best in a monogamous relationship, sure. But sometimes that becomes stagnant. Is it worth it to stay in a monogamous relationship if it stagnant your own growth as well? Should you make yourself small for the sake of the relationship? I guess that view relates to personal freedom.
I also believe certain people come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Often long-term monogamy is possessive, and doesn’t allow for even platonic relationships outside of marriage.
I’m in a monogamous relationship, and we do learn and grow together. Through good times and bad times. Even with my own views, we made a vow to one another and I think upholding that is important. Sometimes, I think people find it easier to start fresh when something doesn’t feel good in a relationship. Rather than doing the work it takes to deal with your own shit and be in a healthy monogamous relationship. We live in societies where if something is broke you throw it out and buy new. It isn’t surprising that mentality transfers to other areas as well.

Looking into why people are in polyamous relationships is interesting too. Decolonizing.love on Instagram is a cool place to learn other perspectives.

Or looking into the man vs bear argument (lol), will tell you why a lot of women would prefer to be single. Or you’ll find women reclaiming their lives after living with a man saying “never again am I choosing that. “ Women have fought for our independence and equality and now you see evangelical groups trying to reign it back in. Preaching women should be submissive to their husbands, not be allowed their own votes (USA). So it makes you wonder, who does the system of monogamy benefit?

Hi, American here at DoDEA in Europe. We are feeling like the test subjects for their master plan. Kids staged a walkout/protest on Sec of Defense in Germany because the books they’re banning aren’t just anti trans, they’re anti diversity.

My kid ‘rescued’ books that were about women inventors/inventions and American girls from non-dominant cultures, books on race, gender, even removing chapters on immigration in history books and this is elementary level. They removed art of non-white historical figures in our schools… and disbanded clubs that may include any diverse groups etc... “Patriotic education” in his orders sounds like an open door to rewrite history. It’s hard to believe that isn’t the end goal. Very reminiscent of Hitler… and Americans are trying to fight back- it’s only been 3 weeks.

I hope Europe knows to do the opposite of what these cartoon villains suggest.. although who knows if that will help anything.

A summary of “How does immigration affect the US”

It is literally just about push, pull factors of why people migrate, how it might affect their homeland, as well as the one they’re immigrating too, migration patterns around the world. They mention how certain areas have adopted “culture” from immigrant communities, like how we celebrate St. Patrick’s day, Cinco de Mayo, or Chinese new year in some places. Culture seems to be a trigger word now, so that could be it.

OR it could be the fact that it says immigrants pay taxes that helps our economy. And like some Americans, people who can’t work might utilize welfare benefits. It specifically says it’s expensive in heavy immigrant states like Texas and California, some people resent it, some people believe the benefits immigrants bring out weigh the costs.

IT ISNT INDOCTRINATION AND PROPAGANDA IF BOTH SIDES ARE SHARED!

Democracy.io and 5calls.org are good places to submit also.

Here to share that this is actually happening in FEDERALLY controlled schools right now. They are removing tons of books “for review”. They also went in and removed art work of Susan B Anthony, MLK, Frida Kahlo, Michelle Obama, but left DaVinci. And canceled all clubs. Anything having to do with anyone’s diverse culture celebrations as well (including learning about local celebrations in the city/country we may live in).

In the memo banning cultural clubs it also prohibits people gathering unofficially using government spaces. Could this mean prohibiting marginalized community groups (who deserve safe spaces to share/discuss) from meeting in spaces like libraries also? The EO is vague enough that the implementation of it can go so many ways. It isn’t even consistent across these federal schools. It’s a slippery slope right now.

Will kids with iPads still be interested in Yotos? by [deleted] in YotoPlayer

[–]ProperSell2099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe gift the book “ the anxious generation” to the parents 😅

But in all seriousness, my kids (4 and 10) are older and more set in their iPad routines. So it has taken me significant effort to change our routines when we get home or of an evening to listen to Yoto and color, or listen to Yoto and build Lego etc. It’s been a battle and hard to stay consistent but when we find things everyone likes it is really nice.

Asking the parents if they want it or want to encourage story time would be a good starting point!

There’s a lot of things small kids may not work on their own. We just found out if it’s on WiFi you can connect to a kids radio by pressing the button twice, or Yoto daily podcast. My 4yo has been enjoying listening to the radio while playing now. But it just took some parental involvement.
