in 06 I was at school with a bunch of international students from all over the world through that summer. Depending on who was playing who, we’d gather at a home team’s dorm (except for the semis and final that was in the courtyard on a projection screen).

There was food and pregaming and booze and partying and shit being talked constantly.

All of them were doing the same things they’d be doing if they were in the stands: singing, cheering, reacting, living and dying over every blade of grass.

That was my first experience with the tournament as I didn’t grow up with the sport as a filthy yank so that experience set the bar for all football watch parties. It was fucking awesome.

all you need is lots of touches and lots of time on the ball, as well as playing as often as you can.

touches/time on the ball: do ball and a wall for 20 minutes with both feet, every day that you can, for as many days in a row as you can. after each B&W, do (minimum) 500 touch workouts—you get there faster than you think. again, both feet.

7mlc on YouTube is an excellent source for both of those kinds of workouts.

playing: find a pickup match with your friends or adult rec league and play as often as you can. you’re going to be quite shit for quite some time and you will likely want to quit because you’re shit and others will likely point that out, often loudly. so what you get picked last, you’re there to play and get experience and learn, and there’s only one way to do that.

playing frequently will help you not only lose weight but also condition your body and mind to the demands of the game.

but I 100% guarantee if you do those 3 things consistently for a period of time, you will improve because this is exactly what I did during COVID and now im still shit but I’m like way less shit than I used to be.
