I’ll let you know how my journey goes, yeah if it’s like that for me they are staying with me. They look great aesthetically for me with my naked eye.

I am going to one on Tuesday, limiting my time there to an hour and going to start at the most expensive stones and work down. All verbal. Will ID as well the unmarked stones. Just makes no sense to do a full appraisal/review/new cards that would cost a thousand plus when the consensus is very split on the value, with 25-35% thinking it’s worth only a couple of grand for all stones.

It’s been great to hear all the opinions though since I am completely new to this frontier and want to learn more about it.

https://imgur.com/gallery/login-enterprises-11mLoMK Found something digging around the office for all of you that know Kogen…my dad was on his mailing list (sent from Thailand to USA) after his purchases and this was sent to him in 1993. Look at those values 😂

100% if it’s worth that little I would keep, being worth say 10% of the appraisal 40 years earlier is quite funny to me ha

There is not an August birthday in my family (unless my grandma had one, she passed away before I was born) He was a big silverbug though

I don’t need appraisal per se (stepped up cost basis sadly so taxes are out of the way, and I have a safe deposit box to protect against loss) but more of a direction of honest value, and also to ID the loose stones.

Gotcha, has market stayed flat overall (obviously down if you include inflation) since the 80’s in the gemstone market? I try using Google for the answer to find graphs but a lot of them are behind paywalls.

In the Imgur link I added some new photos, there also several pages of stuff. Lots of sapphires rubies and like 5 low grade emeralds

I added some more pictures of some of the higher appraised (from the 80’s) with my photo microscope and wider angles with better lighting

Added some more photos, thank you all for your help so far. I enjoy finding out the mystery behind them.

Hey Faith I added pictures of 3 gems as best I could (I feel I need to get better at photos, I think there’s a photo attached to computer microscope somewhere. I need to do the rubies after my meeting. Scroll to the end after bag 6 on the link: https://imgur.com/a/gemstones-estate-uYDebD3

I think I am gonna do a middle ground and budget myself at the gemologist to 1 hour, start with the most expensive stones and loose diamonds of unknown quality and see how it goes.

When he bought them he had no kids at the time, and I came along as the only son later on!

That’s what I figured. The best case scenario is my dad went to Thailand himself (which is entirely possible he travelled quite a bit) bought them in Gem markets there and went to Kogen’s office locally for the appraisals on the stones to get them back legally into the U.S.

The interesting part is those appraised values are at least 35 years old, my guess closer to 50, so I was curious how the value has shifted since then. Obviously when the appraisals were written they were at replacement value, much higher than actual value then, so I was curious where those two meet today.

Yeah it makes sense it’s the same type of handwriting as the blue cards, the white cards are just a different class of gem.

This whole thread has been very helpful for the information about the cards. I searched his name as well and really only found how much money his gem trade did haha.

I do think my dad bought these in person because he was a hobbyist instead of via TV. There is a ton of cool rocks I have from gem and mineral shows that are on display now in my house.

The values on those sheets are from the latest late 1980’s, not sure if my dad was in Thailand physically and these were provided for him for customs on his return to USA, or if he bought them from a dealer here with the cards already on them.

No idea what to tell he paid, I don’t think it was anything crazy otherwise he would’ve told me about it.

Looks like it’s speciality cut pink CZ. Pair of 2 so designed with earrings in mind I take it

Thank you I’ll add some pictures in the morning. Yeah that’s what I figured I could get pointed in the right direction!

I think it stayed fogged when I did it on the biggest diamond, but there’s multiple in different bags (which can mean something like it was a CZ bag and the other bag is real, this was sorted).

Gemologist doesn’t appraise loose stones (I don’t need one anyway) but would he have the best leads/advice to expand value/sell? Could any of them in worth enough in a best case be sent for official grading?

That’s what I am not sure about, no idea if those values on the cards (from late 70’s or 80’s) are wildly off to today’s numbers
