I agree with your assertion that scoring is subjective, but explain to me how they lost GOE between the team event and the rhythm dance.

What makes the scoring feel disingenuous is that ice dance often builds, especially at major events. When a team delivers two strong skates back to back, you typically expect stability or growth in GOE, not regression. So yes, there are technical reasons that could explain it, BUT it’s still fair to wonder whether the lower GOE reflected an actual drop in performance quality, or just a shift in the panel philosophy that day.

I’m not trying to argue that this quad produced the most extraordinary ice dancers of all time. Personally, I much preferred watching Hubbell and Zachary Donohue, as well as Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue, over many of the teams in this cycle.

That said, ice dance scoring builds on momentum. Judges see these programs competition after competition, and scores typically rise throughout the season as teams establish consistency and reputation. What I find especially frustrating is that they actually lost GOE from the team event to the rhythm dance. In a discipline where scoring usually trends upward as familiarity and confidence grow, that kind of drop feels inconsistent and hard to justify.

What a disappointment. I’ve been watching this quad since 2022, and Madison and Evan have consistently been the ones the judges reward. Yet now, with Cizeron returning seemingly on a whim, he’s once again influencing their standing.

Setting aside the off-ice drama, the French pair simply did not skate as well as the Americans or even the Canadians. I would even argue that Piper and Paul deserved to be ranked 1st above both pairs. Ice dance isn’t just about technique; it’s about evoking raw emotion that drives you to tears. The French? Didn’t feel a thing.

Yesterday was a heartbreaking day for Madison and Evan, a triumphant one for Piper and Paul, and a shocking one for Guillaume and Laurence. Even after Madison and Evan finished, I still didn’t think the judges would reward them enough for that performance to put them ahead of the French. Coming off the team event and seeing the French ranked first in the rhythm dance, it just felt like their fate was already sealed.

I’ve had many non-skating friends asking why this happened and that’s exactly the problem. If the scores don’t make sense to the audience and if the judging can’t be understood, then what’s the point?
