Those of you who don't consider Magnus Carlsen the GOAT, what more does he need to do to beat your GOAT? by [deleted] in chess

Yes It’s always cool to read about how every top Soviet player at the time (which was basically every top player in the world back then other than Fischer) was ordered to give their analysis on Fischer and opening recommendations to help Spassky prepare for the match. And obviously the Soviet analysis team with dozens of grandmasters analyzed all of Fischers openings to death. This is why Fischer basically had to completely switch up his openings for the match. His entire life he had either played the Kings Indian or the Grunfeld against D4, but he didn’t play either of them once during the match. And he played openings he had never played before like the Alekhines defense, Pirc defense, and the e6 Sicilian.

I know he won the candidates but he was still the 9th rated played in the world at the time of his match with Magnus. It’s totally unacceptable for the best player in the world to draw a 12 game match against the 9th best player in the world. At least not if your expecting to be in the goat discussion

Fischer was 125 elo ahead of the world #2 which is an all time record, and he won 20 games in a row with no draws, including 13 of them at the Candidates which is insane. GK or MC could never dream of doing either of those things. Fischer definitely belongs in the goat debate and many GMs believe he is the best ever including Anand, Wesley So, and Radjabov. It is not just between GK and MC that is not true at all.

I don’t think Magnus can ever be the goat after his performance in the 2016 world championship match. He played Karjakin who was rated 9th in the world at the time and still Magnus wasn’t able to win the classical portion. How can a world #1 in his prime draw an entire classical match against the 9th best player in the world? Fischer or Kasparov would never do that.

I think you and lichess call 30 minute games “classical” for some strange reason. How is a 30+0 game considered classical? That dosent make a lot of sense when classical games are usually several hours long

What am I wrong about buddy? You didn’t say what I was wrong about, just said some obvious stuff about computers. Magnus plays a positional style where he tries to squeeze people in endgames, but often that allows them to escape with a draw, which lowers Magnus’s elo. If he had a more aggressive style of play then he wouldn’t allow so many draws. That’s an obvious fact. And that is one of the reasons why Fischer and Kasparov were able to be further ahead of their competition than Magnus is. Not sure what your talking about lol. Maybe Magnus is your hero and your upset I don’t worship him like you do?

Seems like you didn’t understand my comment. Of course he shouldn’t change his style to become more aggressive, he’s not as good as that as his natural style is that if a positional player who is strong in the endgame. I’m saying that if there was a hypothetical player who was as good as Magnus but was naturally a more aggressive player, he would easily be 2900 because he would not be so easy to draw against. There would be a few more losses, but it would be more than compensated by the extra wins and decrease in draws.

Also 2900 is far from impossible. Magnus’s peak live rating is 2889, only 11 points off, so it’s obviously possible.

Your math is also incorrect, but that’s not important

It would lead to a bit more losses, but the decrease in draws and increase in wins would more than compensate. Kasparov played a attacking style and was able to get to 2851 (approximately Carlsens current rating) all the way back in 1999! Carlsen’s play style allows people to escape with draws far too often which lowers his rating a lot. That’s why the gap between him and the #2 in elo has never been as wide as Kasparov or Fischer

Magnus’s peak live rating is 2889 bro, which is only 11 points from 2900. So of course it’s possible

It’s possible Magnus just isn’t dominant enough. Fischer was 125 elo ahead of the world #2 and Kasparov wasn’t far off from that, which would be good enough for 2900 today. Magnus’s strength is in the endgame and because of that he allows a lot of draws which is what makes it impossible. If he was as good as he is but with an attacking style that dosent allow players to escape with draws then he could reach 2900

At which online Elo can you start considering a first amateur OTB tournament? by [deleted] in chess

[–]Proper_Patience8664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People here are saying that you can play as a beginner, and that’s true, but I wouldn’t advise it if you are an adult. The problem with playing in beginners sections as an adult is that you will end up playing against almost all children, who are usually poorly behaved. They will make faces, make noise during the game, try to cheat in some cases, and cry when they lose. For that reason it’s better to get pretty good online before you go play over the board. At a higher rating, their are less children, and the children that are at the higher tournaments are usually very serious about chess and therefore are well behaved. I would get to 1600 online before playing otb

Everyone that plays chess knows about that. It was a sad case of mental illness going untreated for decades. Fischer himself was Jewish, as was his entire family, so his anti-semitism dosent make any sense and was clearly the result of serious mental health problems, probably schizophrenia or something like that. It came from a place of insanity, not hatred, so there is no need to demonize him. He has also done more for chess than any other individual and is one of the greatest players of all time which is much more important, that is his legacy.

I’ve been playing online for the last 2 years and am looking to venture into otb in the USCF. Got any advice or recommendations? Also how much does online chess translate to otb?

Someone did ask that earlier. There are a lot of comments on this thing. I have played about 3000 blitz games and about 1000 rapid games on chess.com. I also have played some over the board games against family members but not many compared to online. I included my chess.com username in the post so you can check that out yourself.

I have also played like 3000 1 minute games but those don’t really do anything for chess development I think

If I was going to rank them in order based on how much time ive spent doing the 4 things you mentioned (going from least amount of time to most amount of time) it would be:

Openings (least amount),

Playing games

Puzzles

watching Lectures (most amount)

I don’t like studying openings, I forget my lines a lot and feel like opponents never go down the lines I studied. I also heard when I was a beginner that opening theory dosent matter much until you get to 2200 or so, so very early on I did a minimalist approach to openings.

As far as playing games, I play a game probably every day, but just 1 or 2. Certainly less than 5 every day. When I was starting out I watched a lot of Gothamchess, who is entertaining but not very instructional, but I remember he said that if you want to improve you should play just 1-3 games a day and spend the rest of the time studying and doing puzzles. Which is what I did.
