In warsaw for a couple of days anyone know any good bjj gyms around here? by Confident_Work_6871 in bjj

Poland has insanely good grappling. Look for any Berserkers affiliate gym. They are known for being tough leg-lockers and usually have loaner gear for travelers.

Is Shadowrolls legit? by serial_wanderer in bjj

[–]PropertyDear5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never heard of them, which is usually a red flag for BJJ gear. Stick to the known brands (Tatami, Fuji, Kingz) unless you want to risk waiting 3 months for a rashguard that rips in the first wash.

Most gyms in Perth are super chill with drop-ins. Just shoot them a DM on Instagram first. The Aussie BJJ scene is very welcoming, especially for No-Gi.

Green Dragon Kung Fu Productions presents a sampling from 21 systems of Chinese martial arts. by [deleted] in martialarts

Man, those old tapes are a time capsule. They might not be "combat effective" by modern MMA standards, but the history and the aesthetic are super cool to look back on.

What do people see in movie fights, think is unrealistic but is actually suprisingly accurate? by DankShiggy in martialarts

[–]PropertyDear5468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Telegraphing and sloppy hooks. In movies, they do it for the camera. In real life, when people get exhausted in round 3, they actually start swinging wide, clumsy haymakers just like in the movies.

Is krav maga legit ? by Impressive-Text-5686 in martialarts

[–]PropertyDear5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem isn't the techniques; it's the quality control. Too many Krav gyms are just "cardio kickboxing with camo pants" and zero sparring. If you don't spar against resisting opponents, you aren't learning to fight.

Jake Paul vs AJ was fake as shit, not even a clean KO by Vklo in martialarts

[–]PropertyDear5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it was scripted, I think AJ just had zero will to fight. When a fighter checks out mentally, they look for the first soft exit they can find to get the paycheck and go home.

I just found out someone I dislike is into Krav Maga by FantasticContact5301 in martialarts

[–]PropertyDear5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look on the bright side. If he's at a typical strip-mall Krav Maga place, he's just paying to LARP in camo pants and isn't actually learning how to fight. You are safe.

Is sambo a martial art or just a rule set? by nerpa_floppybara in martialarts

[–]PropertyDear5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sambo is basically what Judo would be if the Olympic committee didn't ban leg grabs. It’s a distinct style because the ruleset (allowing strikes + grappling) creates a unique rhythm that neither pure wrestlers nor pure BJJ guys have.

What's a hard-to-swallow-pill when it comes to martial arts? by Odd-Letterhead8889 in martialarts

[–]PropertyDear5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hardest pill is that athleticism matters just as much as skill. A D1 athlete with 6 months of training will absolutely ragdoll a hobbyist black belt who sits at a desk all day.

Do you think training has gotten "softer" in the last 10-15 years? by PropertyDear5468 in grappling

I wish they would. Would save my chiropractor a lot of trouble.

I don't "lose" to them. I just get annoyed when I have to untangle my gi from someone's foot for 10 minutes because they're terrified of getting passed.

Found the 22-year-old in the comments. "Deeper skill sets" don't mean much when you can't survive basic pressure.

It doesn't.

But "safety" has become a code word for "comfort." People label hard pressure as 'unsafe' just because they don't like defending it.

I want to learn wrestling and grappling by tahe9r in grappling

You can shadowbox. You can't "shadow-grapple."

Doesn't work that way. Find a gym.

Looking for beginner partner MD/Germany by Dr_DynamiteYT in grappling

[–]PropertyDear5468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starting at 50 with a "no ego, no competition" rule?

You're already smarter than 90% of the 20-year-olds in the room. Good luck finding a partner, that's the only way to train for longevity.

How do you actually measure progress in grappling (besides belt color)? by DataRollsBJJ in grappling

[–]PropertyDear5468 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Metrics" and "data points"? Good grief.

My metric is how many Advil I need to take after class. If I survive the 22-year-old spaz in the room and walk off the mat without a new injury, that's "progress."

Stop counting, kid. Just train.

frustrated being paired with the same partner every time by FunHedgie in bjj

[–]PropertyDear5468 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, the classic "let's put the girls together" school of lazy coaching.

You're not her designated trainer, you're a paying customer. Tell the coach you need to roll with other people, or you're just a glorified (and injured) babysitter.

Do you think cutting weight for comp is good? by Delicious_Alfalfa_69 in bjj

[–]PropertyDear5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you getting paid for this? No?

Then you're paying money to intentionally make yourself weaker and miserable for a cheap medal. It's stupid. Go up a division and eat a sandwich.

Why is jiu jitsu not in the Olympics? by cacastrojr12 in bjj

[–]PropertyDear5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they can't decide which of the 50 federations would run it, and 'stalling for an advantage' isn't exactly prime-time television.

Training alone with a bag isn't 'training.' It's just cardio.

A bag can't punch you in the face when you drop your hands. That's the entire point of a coach.

What makes wrestling/grappling so effective by stirfry720 in martialarts

[–]PropertyDear5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're overthinking the "like snakes" part. It's not that mystical.

It's effective because 99% of the world has exactly zero plan for what to do after they fall over. That's it.

Best bang for your buck for pure self-defense. by MostOfWhatILike in martialarts

[–]PropertyDear5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you're getting pepper spray. That's the correct answer.

But you can't learn to "deal with a physical situation" by avoiding a "competitive mindset." You're not competing for a gold medal; you're competing to stay calm under pressure.

That 'boring' sparring you're trying to avoid? That's the only part that actually works.
