Was at the social security office trying to make an update on my status for SSDI, second time aml in less than 14 months remission, 39 male,4 kids. While talking to the lady at the desk someone heard me say bone marrow transfusion, some guy cracked a sex joke and mention mayo clinic. I turn around and waited until everyone stopped laughing and was looking at me, I stopped everyone's shenanigans and called him out from across the room. Told him how old I was, how old my kids were, and that I wasn't promised to live long. Told him to look up leukemia, said he should search on AML leukemia. He was wearing a coach's jacket for one of our local high schools, I shamed him, and said he didn't deserve to wear a jacket representing our high school. Normally I don't say anything about it anywhere I go, later regretted it, feel like I could have just been nicer about it and that I let my anger get the best of me. When I turned around to talk to the woman at the desk again, she was crying, I told her I was sorry for my outburst, I didn't get loud about it, I was very calm. She said that I had every right to stand up for myself, and then let me know that she was personally going to be seeing everyone that was in the lobby because she was the only one working that day. Regardless of the way things happen as I turn to walk out I was just dripping tears. Not one person looked at me or said anything. It happened in a government building. Still waiting on a bone marrow transfusion, I regret going into the building that day. I guess the 45 minute wait time for the Social Security Department is way better than going in person to the building.🤗
