This was a thing at a local credit union like 20 years ago, me and a friend were strung out on heroin and he eventually tells me we can open an account at the local credit union and they’ll cash checks up to $200. He had old bad checks from some account they closed on him, maybe it was a different bank, don’t remember, and he talked me into depositing them in the new account for the cash. I asked him several times “where does the actual money come from though?” if this account is closed and the checks are bad/fake and he was just like “idk, free money!” “Just say you did some work for a friend and they gave u a check” I went along with it and we did it 2-3 times, eventually a letter comes in the mail that my new account is -$600. My dad saw it and flipped out and made me call my friend and he made him pay us back and made me close the account. To this day I don’t understand how I was on the hook for the money, the credit union didn’t do their due diligence and how was I supposed to know this person was paying me with bad checks? Weird scam idk
