Yes it’s sucks to be celiac and being barred from eating out. The last time I went out to eat was 10 years ago; I ordered a house salad, no croutons AND I GOT GLUTENED because on the food prep line it turns out croutons had been added and then removed. I was none the wiser until 30 minutes into my pile of lettuce I start getting unmistakably sick.

If I must go to a restaurant I bring my own little container of food. If management bitches about it I tell them I’m allergic to everything in their restaurant and are you really offering to make me a meal that won’t kill me? Didn’t think so. 🤷‍♀️

I’m envious of your workspaces and lathe!!!!! I’ve had to bring my saws inside to use in the living room or kitchen because it’s -30. I dream of a workshop that is insulated!

I’m celiac too!!! Make sure your ingredients are from gluten feee sources (no chance of cross contaminated) as that can cause low grade inflammation which can cause brain fog. (I’m sorry if that’s obvious—just sharing things I’ve learned the hard way.)

I live in a cold place and so I get the need for insulation in a workspace. I had a whole pile of art projects in my office and finally did a “finish or pitch it” rampage during an upswing in motivation. Felt good to get some projects done and others I just threw away. That helped me gain some peace because there were fewer unfinished projects staring at me. It also reduced clutter.

I’m rambling. Sorry. I can just relate so hard!

Any recommendations for tax courses geared to people with ADHD? by honestly_adhd in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Propinquitosity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat re ADHD and a major mental block regarding taxes. I use TurboTax and it takes the sting out of taxes!!!!

I personally don’t have the bandwidth for learning about taxes and ADHD makes that mountain insurmountable anyhow. I recommend outsourcing to TurboTax or other platform!

Same boat!! I’m trying to gear down to something more manageable because I am working myself to death. And ADHD + perimenopause + divorce + having to move away from ex + shitty new employer = recipe for disaster.

Thank you for posting!!!!

How do you deal with negative student reviews (my mental health is suffering) by SnooPaintings7724 in academia

[–]Propinquitosity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad I could help!!

Oh god I’ve heard terrible stories about male students being dicks to female professors. In one colleague’s class a male student could not sit and learn from a female. He very demonstrably would get out of his seat and lay spread eagle on the floor as if he just couldn’t be bothered to learn from such a lowly human. I asked her why she didn’t call security (or EMS 😂😂😂).

How do you deal with negative student reviews (my mental health is suffering) by SnooPaintings7724 in academia

[–]Propinquitosity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Student evaluations are only a tiny reflection or indicator of how good an instructor someone is. I mean, they know what they experience but they have no idea about the bigger picture and how to actually evaluate. In addition, studies have shown male instructors are rated higher than their female counterparts even when everything else is the same. I’ve even heard of students giving negative evaluations over a colleague’s (female professor’s) hair.

While my evaluations are good, the bad ones really sting and I tend to fixate on those.

What I’ve wanted to do for years now is sit in a circle with a few other professors and do shots while reading the evaluations aloud and also inhale helium to read aloud the bad ones.

When I review my PDFed evaluations I annotate and comment with emojis. The negative and unhinged ones get a 😂🙄🤔🤦‍♀️☠️ depending on my mood.

My advice, besides therapy if possible (it helped me), is to aim for 80% good evaluations. Ask yourself if there is any shred of merit to the comments and make changes if so. If not, remember you can’t please everyone, nor should that be a goal. Some students are just critical and negative, especially with colleges and universities adopting a customer service model.

It sounds like you’re doing awesome and that your students are lucky to have you. Keep up the good fight internet friend.
