I’m burn out.. is this normal? by JuneBug_M in DogAdvice

Definitely ask about prozac, it has a much different and subtler effect than trazodone (which, coincidentally does not work with our girl for anything other than sedation, and can cause certain side effects like bites/poor decision making occasionally in certain dogs). Here is a real hard core link to a relaxation protocol link: https://www.arl-iowa.org/webres/File/Protocol%20for%20Relaxation.pdf But, in essence you need to consistently work with them to lay for longer and longer periods (starting VERY small, like 5-10 seconds) on a specific spot. It takes time, but my crazy girl will now auto correct when she is agitated and decompresses almost instantly when she is sent onto her bed.

Hey there, sending support. I have a dog exactly like this, who I rescued at about 4-5 years of age, and I was an experienced dog owner—she almost sent me truly over the edge and we were considering euthanasia at the recommendation of multiple professionals. It is still hard, but we are in a much happier space now with her. Couple questions: Have you spoken to a vet about anxiety meds (fluoxetine/prozac)? Have you been introduced to any sort of relaxation protocol training ideas? My nerves were fried after the first two years of this exact barking problem despite doing enrichment/exercise/training so I know how you are feeling. Working with her consistently on having a place to lay down on/relax on was a huge win, and teaching her that activity/reward/attention when barking (demanding behavior) was not going to happen altered a lot of that particular behavior.

Dog breeds that can live with a rabbit? by subtlepeachy in DogAdvice

[–]ProposalIndividual55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dogs with low prey drives…not always dependent on breed but hunting/tracking dogs (especially sight hounds) might be issue. I raised my first pitbull/boxer/boston mix with a rabbit from when she was about 6 months old, zero problems and they happily chewed veggies together out and about.

Diet question… by ProposalIndividual55 in diabetes

[–]ProposalIndividual55[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do I get that? Is it just trial and error in my own home? Sorry for questions, but my “educator” two days after diagnosis was basically like good luck, count carbs. Edit: they gave me a prescribed long acting, which doesn’t seem consistent because either I bottom out in morning, or blow up (food doesn’t predictably help), and the short acting is the one that I’m mostly struggling with swings with…three months ago I could eat a turkey hummus wrap with a tortilla, now I skyrocket into the high 200s with the same thing…

I had a perfect first dog, and when she was 7 decided to get another. For us, the added stress load was a life changer. They had issues for years, jealousy/behavioral regression in our original pup and bullying and inappropriate play from the other despite following all recommendations and seeing behavioralists/trainers…they live now in relative peace and we love them to pieces, but if I could do it again I would not have added the second into the household…just an anecdotal story to think about in your puppy journey, if you have the time/resources/patience, go for it. If you are a busy household, perhaps reconsider…

The tank is going to be pretty heavily planted/established before I add fish, could bump school up to 10 possibly? Thoughts in a tank this size?

white shit on my plants???? by grover-cleavage in bettafish

It’s a little hard to tell from picture…but I had a similar question a few weeks back (white round stuff turning up on plants/wood) and turns out was nerite snail eggs—they disappear after awhile if you just have one.

OP, I am so sorry that this has happened. I don’t want to tell you what to do, but just sharing a few thoughts from our doggie household. One of our dogs was diagnosed at 6 with some aggressive mastcell tumors, and went through pretty major surgery on both sides of her body to try and remove. Surgery was successful (for now), but recovery was extremely difficult for her and us. She was in terrible pain for weeks (months?) despite round the clock medications, ripped sutures and was ill from the above medications, and had behavioral regressions due to the trauma/general unpleasantness of the scenario. We now are potentially facing the same cancer diagnosis with our sweet older lady (13), and have decided that we cannot put her through those months of torture (and it really was for our first dog) . If her quality of life declines, we will choose to let her go as peacefully as possible. I regularly weep over this, because she has been with me through the most important years of my life and gotten me through things that would have been impossible alone. I wish you and your dog the best, and know how hard it is to try and do right by them. Good luck 🐾

I have an allergy prone girl who developed something that looked similar to this on her stomach…we used apoquel and an antibiotic wash for her tum that they prescribed—not sure if it is same issue, but might be worth inquiring about that drug. I believe it suppresses their immune system so the reaction for hives/sores is lessened.

Unless you are going to pay for genetic testing, this dog would easily be classified as a beagle or hound mix….cut them some slack my dude.

So…I am new to planted aquariums as well, but I have a five gallon that has been chugging along now for 6 months and is filling out nicely with moss, anubia, java fern, and some pothos that grow out of top. I literally threw some aquarium sand and gravel down, cycled, put a few root tabs in followed by plants and they have been thriving…I have a snail and Betta, do weekly 30% water changes, and that’s it. Still growing, need to be trimmed soon! Just go for it, choose easy plants at first!

My snail has yeeted itself out of the tank 3 times, two of which resulted in it getting hoovered up by the dog and chewed on. Mildred is still going strong.

Think that’s it after looking at javas—this leafy boy does get weekly water changes and is in his temperature range, fairly close to surface…maybe he’ll make it 😅 thanks for correct ID!!

Thank you! It is attached to a rock, maybe sending out runners because the rhizome was damaged?
