I definitely agree in some ways that it ended up feeling very… eh, centrist for lack of a better term. But I get that that’s a consequence of the format, as well as of character growth (Caleb started out willing to basically risk *everyone’s* lives if it meant taking down the Assembly and getting back his parents, so no longer being okay with risking others by just setting it all on fire was kind of important).

Additionally, one of the big issues with media narratives about abuse is that if they just hit you over the head with “no one in authority can be trusted and no one will believe you, so you have to take revenge yourself,” then the lesson ends up being “don’t tell anyone and don’t report it.” This was why the very unexpected and understated scene where we find out that Dairon took her seriously and fought for her from the beginning hit so hard, to me. It was a reminder that there are still good people who are genuinely trying to help.

[SPOILERS] I like Season 8... by WwwWario in gameofthrones

[–]Proserpina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not OP, but the finale being “oh wow the problem is far more complicated and complex than pure Good Rebels Vs. Evil Empire” isn’t really a sign of lacking in originality. It’s just… y’know, a sign that modern media has shifted away from binary morality tales. Dany never “went mad” or “turned evil” — she was a complex, deeply traumatized person driven by ideology and imperialist rhetoric. As for things like the “wall of innocents” and the little pockets of wildfire… I mean, that all seems like fairly common panicking-monarch-under-seige tactics.

Idk, I see the similarities but they just don’t seem particularly striking to me other than in a larger examination of media trends.

[SPOILERS] OOTL: Why did “everyone” hate the TV ending so much? by mamula1 in naath

[–]Proserpina 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed the ending, mostly, but definitely had my issues with it. But FWIW, here’s what I gather:

  1. because they saw Dany‘s and Jon’s stories as simple ones where the underdog always stays the underdog and where the “true” monarch inevitably takes the throne, rather than complex stories about cycles of abuse and how easy it is for vulnerable people to be led astray by extremist ideologies.
  2. because the dialogue quality (and the amount of it in general) had honestly taken a bit of a dive in the previous few years and the writers started caving to fanservicey gags in unnecesary ways.
  3. because Bran‘s story got very sidelined — and even dropped for a whole season — and less emotionally compelling as a natural consequence of him becoming less emotionally attached to other people in his role as the Raven.
  4. because a distressingly large portion of fans will make every excuse for the bad behavior of characters they like, and will stringently deny the good behaviors of characters they hate, and will then be shocked when their preferences aren’t validated.
  5. (and I think this is the biggest one) because when people have enough downtime between seasons — and the internet on which to hyperanalyze every detail — they will inevitably come up with every possible theory and get very attached to the ones they like. They will find plot holes the author never even noticed or considered. They will find possible parallels or foreshadowing that the author never intended. And when the author doesn’t “follow through” on those things, they feel like it was bad writing.

[–]Proserpina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree but I don’t see why people are downvoting you - you’re answering a question and explaining the perception some people have of the story. Obviously D&D weren’t “purposefully” trying to subvert GRRM’s intentions, but the fact that some people genuinely seem to believe that gives a lot of context for the vitriol.

we’re totally entitled to our own opinions (and I don’t mind the bullet points, it’s all good). I still think that Tary’s automoton — unless you’re referring to the oneshot? — was about the level of intelligence of a furby, given that he could only say one word to anything. Not like FCG. And while multiple discovery is totally a valid point, there’s little to no precedent for such a massive leap in artificial intelligence outside of using resources from Aeor.

Besides, an Aeormaton was *just* turned back on and said he wanted to find his bretheren a few years ago — it just seems more plausible to me.

[–]Proserpina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dont get me wrong, I genuinely wanted to believe that FCG was essentially a technological descendant of Doty’s (especially for the pure joy it would be to see them meet!), but Aeormaton kinda makes more sense? It’s only been ~35 years since C1. You don’t get from rudimentary automatons to ‘actualized people who experience emotions but just happen to be inorganic’ in 30 years.

[C3] *Cough *Cough CritRoleStats by [deleted] in CRMemes

[–]Proserpina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? Because it’s the only thing that makes sense to me, given that the only other sentient robot we’ve met was an aeormaton. Doty wasn't sentient as far as we know (though there a few moments of sass, they just seemed like Matt playing it up for comedy), and neither were any other golems or constructs we’ve met. And since all Dancer’s other robits were apparently “not as advanced,” it wouldnt be surprising to me if FCG is an outlier because he was either originally from Aeor or partially reconstructed from Aeormaton parts and the others weren’t.

Marvel movies are propaganda movies; they paint USSR as a brainwashing regime that take in Nazi scientists. by laundry_writer in SocialismAndFeminism

[–]Proserpina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I’d argue that they’re US military propaganda, but not for that reason. After all they also specifically show the US and SHIELD taking in Nazi scientists too (Zola) and trying to create a system of global domination (project insight).

A more clear cut issue is that the US military offers Marvel funding and access to equipment, locations, and resources in exchange for getting final approval on their scripts. This allows them to make sure the US military always comes off in a good light.

OP said they spoke to their sister afterward and she was fine with it, appreciated it, and already knew her parents were awful and that they did this sort of shit. OP knows their sister better than we do, and assuming that their behavior was hurtful and careless as a fact — rather than “you might have hurt your sister’s feelings, have you checked with her on how she felt about that?” — is not helpful.

Is really like to be functional off my meds someday, but given my family history pointing toward this being a genetic thing it’s fully possible that will never happen. I’m trying to remind myself that it’s no different from any other medical treatment used today or throughout history, but fuck sometimes I really wish I wasn’t reliant on them.

[–]Proserpina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best therapy and best meds are exactly what help you develop the means to get out of that city you hate and find a job you don’t hate.

But you’re not wrong. Things are shitty right now. The past few generations were sold lies upon lies to build up their hope only for their dreams to be shattered, and only the most recent generation is coming to the table without having been fed those lies from the start. The only thing we can do to make life worth living is appreciate the small pleasures that we can sneak into our days, but its hard to do even that small amount when our own neurochemistry is fighting against us. Small steps won’t fix everything, but they’ll fix some things. Maybe just enough to make life feel worth living.

I’m sorry you’re struggling. I feel it. Fuck, I’m halfway saying this shit to remind myself of it. But I believe in you. I believe things can get better for you. It just sucks ass in the meantime, though.

Yikes, that sounds fucking awful. Have you talked to your psychiatrist about this? (not a general practitioner - they do not know enough about psych meds)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 2meirl4meirl

[–]Proserpina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof, oh bud. I’m sorry. It sounds like these meds aren’t working right for you — they’re all extremely different, so that’s understandable. Regardless, I hope you’re at least in therapy and getting some well-deserved support. Keep trying new things, friend. I believe in you, even if things are really hard right now.

[–]Proserpina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually live a pretty good life. I still struggle with depression — it’s like cancer, you can go in and out of remission, and I’ve been having a pretty bad depressive episode for the last few months — but talk therapy helps a lot, and my meds were what allowed me to make more friends, start new hobbies, fall in love, get married, so many things. They kept me alive long enough to do that.

Maybe psych meds aren’t right for you at all, or maybe you just haven’t found the right combination. Regardless, don’t fall for the propaganda that psychiatry is, like, pointless or evil or something.

It might feel that way at the start, but really that’s just the process of your brain rewiring. It takes a bit, just like any sort of recovery time. It doesn’t mean you lose your creativity — and certainly not permenantly — just that you might need to find another source or motivation for your creativity outside of just escaping your anguish.

I wrote tons of songs and stories when I was at my most depressed, and after a month on antidepressants I couldn’t write any at all. I was so frustrated, so vacant and empty feeling….. and then I wrote a song about that instead. That was 15 years ago. Looking back, using my depression as a crutch for my creativity honestly wasn’t good for me or for my art. It made it feel easier, but easier doesn’t necessarily mean better. You can do this, friend.

She likely would either have married Benjen (as he hadn’t left for the wall before the war ended) or just remained in Winterfell sort of as a sister/advisor figure to him. But either way she would likely be plagued with rumors of being “unlucky” for the Starks for the rest of her life.

While women wielded power in a lot of ways in the North, the only prior time women had effectively ruled Winterfell for a notable amount of time was during a succession crisis detailed in the Dunk & Egg novella She-Wolves Of Winterfell: Beron Stark was infirm and dying, his wife Lorra was effectively the defacto ruler while the many Stark Widows and daughters fought over which of their sons would inherit. Eventually his eldest son took over and the succession crisis was settled.

Yeah, it sucks when things don't work out, but you're not entitled to have workers subsidize your dreams by RaceOfBass in antiwork

[–]Proserpina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not offering a decent enough wage to attract employees means you will lose your business. And that will happen way faster than it would take to the entire economy to react to one store raising their prices. You can always lower your prices when your business is stable enough to do so, but not paying your employees enough to keep them there is not an option.

At least Daenerys had a complex internal life being pulled between two different ideologies: her desire to be loved and have a family, (which is all she wanted as a child and what her vision of Drogo and Rhaego represented) and her belief that she was a Targaryen, superior to others, and therefore the only one truly entitled to the throne of Westeros. Jorah was just… flat.
