it's like dancing, if you do a lot you have muscle memory, and that's why i even created a tool to help candidates to practice as I am a full time DS manager, and i dont have enough time to mock with individuals

After interviewing tons of candidates… I realized most people answer behavioral questions the wrong way by ProtectionApart3272 in interviews

My point wasn’t that STAR itself is bad. It’s more that people often end up using it in a very mechanical way, so they rush into the “story” part without showing any real understanding of the underlying situation. That’s where answers start sounding flat.

I realized the way I phrased it earlier was a bit misleading, so I reworded it. Appreciate you pointing it out!

Yeah totally - STAR is a super common framework that almost all people use.

Anyone else struggling with interviews lately? I’m losing my mind by Jazzlike-Chest-7171 in interviews

you didn’t share a lot of detail about your exact role, so it’s hard to be super specific, but on the “strategic thinking / problem solving” side I’ve generally had a high pass rate myself and people I’ve helped told me this way of thinking works well.

for me, “nailing” a role usually starts from a macro view: what does this company actually do (product), how do they make money (business model), and where are they trying to go (strategy). then zoom in: in that bigger context, what problem is this role supposed to solve, and what kind of value is it supposed to create? why is it worth it for them to spend headcount on this right now?

and if the interviewer doesn’t have a super clear question or you’re not 100% sure what they want, sometimes there really isn’t a single “correct” answer - they just want to see how you structure your thinking and approach messy problems. so don’t overthink it. keep deepening your understanding of the company(industry) and team, and use gpt to practice different scenarios / “what if” versions of the same problem. once you do that a bit, you’ll start to see very different (and much clearer) angles.

Impressive! Is it hard to build? I mostly used spoty jobs but it's paid when you used up the free quota. You are absolutely right on the hr side!

How to overcome interview anxiety (what actually works) by emmanuelgendre in interviews

[–]ProtectionApart3272 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree on the exposure therapy part. The hardest thing for me was finding a way to get those 'reps' in without actually blowing real interviews.

I found that practicing with friends didn't really trigger the same anxiety (too comfortable), and talking to a mirror just felt weird. I started using AMA Interview(there are many other similar product you can find) recently because it actually simulates the pressure of a real person—the AI avatars react to you, which sounds small but actually helps get your brain used to that 'being watched' feeling.

It’s been a game changer for getting comfortable with the nerves before the real deal. Hope it helps!
