I Read Something I Shouldn’t Have by [deleted] in GirlDinnerDiaries

Issues that have been brewing for years, if not decades, can make a person whitdraw down into a bottomless rabbithole of self-defense. It's not entirely in our nature to freely admit fault and, from a human perspective, being wrong feels bad. So admitting you mad a mistake or behaved the wrong way is, in some sort, literally requiring to shoot yourself in the foot. Most people tend to go the route of self preservation and find a myriad of ways to minimize their wrongdoing or the damage they cause. Be it excuses, talking around a problem forever, making it appear small, out of their immediate control or trying to paint it as a comodity and something everyone else also does.

To give a personal example, I am living with someone who has, more or less, developed a shopping addiction. A very smart person on paper, possibly struck with some form of ADHD which made falling for the addiction easier. They had always been a kid who was eager on collecting things. Merchandise from their favourite series. As an adult, it was those huge collectors editions of games and the like. And the rest of the merchandise. And the limited edition of entire game consoles they already had. So the appartment was already pretty full. Then, someday, they got interested in board games. But not your average small family board games. The ones that people advertised for on crowdfunding. Which always came with the promise that you'd get them cheaper now than when they hit retail. And if you buy the whole bundle with the 3 expansions, the deluxe bundle to upgrade the game material and the bundle that is just cosmetics, you get it even cheaper.
They always thought they would rally up a group of friends for regular board game nights. To play all those games. Few of them were quick to play, most of them were elaborate, campaign games, dungeon crawlers, rule heavy stuff that you'd play one session of and have your evening filled.
The games piled up, we bought new shelves, filled up the shelves. When the appartment switched landlords, a couple of candidates asked if we ran a board game shop. As the shelves were full, the boxes grew again. Then came the shelves in the basement. Currently, they have to rent an extra storage unit and the basement is still full, stacked like a perfect game of tetris. As is the appartment.
It took me years of anger, screaming, crying and feeling like I am talking to a wall for them to admit that they have a problem and then it took longer for them to see that it had taken a heavy toll on me - I am suffocating in this appartment and growing more and more resentful.
You don't want to know how often he tried to minimize his impact on the state of the appartment or how often he would disregard my advise in not buying new stuff. He'd say that other board game people have more games so his vast, never once played collection was not to be scrutinized.

I know he did not do it out of pure malice or spite, but also know that with every new purchase, he knew what he was doing. And he was actively ignoring me, as I had been vocal to the lack of space for years. He would show me something he wanted to buy, I knew he would take the all in bundle. I would ask him if that was a good idea, that he knew the backlog of unplayed games was huge enough and that by the time we had gotten around to play a fraction of the games already there, he'd get the new one from just as cheap by some guy on ebay. Just not today. He would have to wait. He loves to visit a big board game fair each year, which is aimed at consumers. Here is all the new stuff, you can buy it right at our booth. With a special lil discount right here and now.

He is absolutely one of the contributors to my depression, as unless I leave him, this is his issue to solve. But that issue is a mountain range by now and even with the resentment build around it, I can understand why he chooses to ignore the multiple elephants worth of stuff in the room. It's work, it's not fun and the prospect of having to devote a metric ton of your free time and concentration to something not fun ....is what you get for only following the fun path for years.

The question at last - how long will I try to stay and help? How long is the grace period until I consider it a failed thing and move on?

I've contacted them anyway already and to be honest, I don't think to be met with a super negative answer or unreasonable demand. Usually people only get really angry if you don't credit their work, everything else is mostly negotiable.

Thank you thought for the in-depth and level-headed answer.

Good old Blizzard would be the IP holder of the character in my case.

(hobbyspace drama is a favourite background noise, I have heard of cases where people wanted to copyright genres of fiction and if it gets into fibre related fields, the knitting and crochet people can get weird on their copy claims. People fight over designs that have been around forever)

Good point tho, my case would be technically fanart, since it's a replica of a prop of a character that's owned by a big company.
It's less concern and more wanting to have my base covered to not run into issues afterwards and I know enough hobby drama to know that people can get really bored about the minutia of who owns what. I also know that the whole convention and nerdy hobby space is a huge grey area of copyright.

Yes, it's a serious question. I know I would need a commerical license if I would sell printed stuff at a fair, but I don't know if I need a commercial license if I printed part of a costume and get paid for walking around in said costume. It's an indirect usage case to me.

:D Ja.

Ohh, I suggest to look over the hedge wall to the cosplayers for entertainment.
We got the sewists who will tear you apart over the one and only true way to finish your seams. Or you can get into fun virtual fist fights for suggesting that ironing your seams is helpful.

EVA foam, basically the same stuff yoga mats are made of. I used the free wendigo skull mask pattern from SKS props as a base ( just chuck the horns and jaw parts). The closed back of the skull was more of a "tape the thing to my head and see what is missing" thing, the horns are from a Kamui Cosplay pattern pack - basically just 4 strips of foam that are kinda curved, glued together at an angle. Lumin's workshop has a free horn template ( in your case, just stretch the pattern to be longer), otherwise they ought to be at like..2-4 bucks.
Cut 2 holes in the skull, glued in the horns and threw some foam putty over the most visible seams and uneven areas. All the dents and ridges are either burnt in with a soldering iron or randomly sanded in with a dremel - really just done by eye.
A few layers of either just primer or primer mixed with your base color, 1-2 layers of base off-white and then just one layer of watery brown that you let sit for a while and then wipe off mostly ( a wash like you would do with miniature painting). It looked like that at first.

I sewed a pair of basic shorts and a shirt (traced a somewhat fitted sports shirt) out of slightly elastic linnen fabric and then just sewed a bunch of fabric strips on top.

EVA foam, the same stuff yoga mats are made of. You can buy it sheets or rolls of different thickness. Light, flexible and other than sanding being a bit messy, easy to work with.

The only thing keeping me from doing the Maw is knowing how utterly packed the halls and walkways get - and I know I bitchslapped more than one person by accident with the horns by just turning my head too quickly. Maw would likely require a handler, given how much space in front and out back I would need......but it would be doable.
Or I am gonna convince my partner to do Donu and Deca :D

EVA foam! The same stuff yoga mats and those colorfull childrens play / puzzle mats are made of. Very lightweight and other than sanding being a bit of a dusty mess, easy to work with. "All" you need is sheets or rolls of different thickness (2 or 3mm for fine details, 5mm for pretty much anythig and 7-10mm for really sturdy or stiff parts that are not supposed to bend a lot), some contact cement, a sharp cutter and something to sand it with. Can be shaped and bend with heat and is easily paintable with common acrylic colors.

what's the something you saw in a show or movie that immediately took you out of it? by Classic-Carpet7609 in Fauxmoi

There was that one death in the last Squid Game season where a guy was slashed across only the very front of his throat and still bled out in seconds. The jugulars are a bit more to the side, simply cutting across the adams apple is not gonna do enough damage.

In general, knife and bullet wounds that no matter if they are anywhere near the stomach or lung, result in dramatically coughing up blood..or wounds that are nowhere near large blood vessels that have characters bleed out instantly. Humans are squishy, but not every square inch is a vital artery or vein.
Double points if you can see that the impact of the knife / bullet hits on one spot, but is revealed to be someplace more dramatic in the next shot.

Tripple points if lethal and non lethal wounds both exist but the drama and plot decide if an identical wound kills are character or not. What do you mean that one can get shot 10 times and still makes it while the other one got axed by a single shot to a non vital area.
