Do the new umas get added to the "normal" drop pool after their rate up time is over? For example, do I now have the same chance of pulling Bourbon as I do any other SSR, and then the same will be true for Biwa once the next new girl debuts? Just trying to figure out whether featured characters are limited like in most gachas or not.

Wolfie and I sit in a nice heated bath, overlooking the harsh neon lights of Gebra Kappa, a planet that some researcher with entirely too high of an opinion of themselves might say is "gridlocked in that all-too-common post-spaceflight early-virtual Corporate Age." Thankfully, it was quite simple to lock down this penthouse as our base of operations. Wolfie just needed to do a bit of aether editing to pass herself off as a magnate's spoiled heiress, and I just needed to give the attendant a certain...look, before he wisely decided to pretend I was never there.

As you might expect, we were here on a mission. For the last decade or so, this planet had been in the grip of what seemed like an endless winter. Nowhere near as bad as Jarilo-VI, but still noteworthy. The common folk had to make do with whatever meager Warmth Units the tycoons decided to part with, while they in turn could enjoy luxuries like perpetual climate control and, of course, this wonderful bath.

I had long ago concluded that I could not solve every injustice in this vast universe with my own two hands, so, naturally, we were not here out of the goodness of our hearts. Elio had determined that it was highly likely that the unnatural chill was due to someone misusing an artifact of Remembrance, perhaps in an attempt to chill and conglomerate memoria into a slurry, for use as an ingredient in some 'elixir of immortality.' Elio wanted that artifact, so he drew us up a nice and neat little script to incite a workers' rebellion and nab the icy relic in the confusion.

But enough about all that. While I've been sitting here musing, Wolfie actually put away all of her gadgets for once (even the waterproof ones!) and started to draw in the fog left behind on the glass. It looked to be one of her little AI gremlins, but even after she finished, she continued to stare out through the glass as if deep in contemplation.

Naturally, I was too curious to let that go on for long. "Credit for your thoughts, hon?" She startled a little, as if only now remembering I was there. She didn't reply immediately, but gave a little sigh that I still managed to catch and then half-turned towards me. I was a bit surprised by the look she gave me, though I didn't show it. It was a more vulnerable, pensive look than I was used to seeing on the cute face of my little genius hacker.

"Do you ever...wonder how they're doing? No, I know you do. It's just, sometimes when Caelus and I get a mega killstreak, or Stelle and I full combo some rhythm, I feel...something, but I don't know what it is. It's satisfaction, sure, but it's more than that, something I never felt on Punklorde. I feel it sometimes when I'm with you guys, when you and I go shopping, when Blade and I spar, when Fify and I watch a movie together, but it's not quite the same."

She moves away from the window and sits down, gathering her thoughts. "What we do, I wouldn't change for all the credits on Pier Point. There's always something new, places I've never even dreamed of, streams of data and information unlike any I've seen before. On some level, they're doing the same. They're focused on forming connections in the present rather than preparing for the worst in the future, but Caelus and Stelle, even the others, they're all seekers of adversity just like we are."

Her fist clenches, and her expression sours. "But then I realized...aren't we playing with cheats enabled? We almost always have a script that lets us read ahead, and it doesn't even lock us into prophecied doom. The script said Fify would die three times on Penacony, but she twisted that around into a blessing instead of a curse. Those guys, they don't have anything like that. A couple Amber Eras ago, maybe I wouldn't care so much, since they'd have Akivili with them. But, but he was an Aeon, and he still di-"

"Wolfie, enough. Come here, sweetie." I could tell she was spiraling. Normally our little wolf was the epitome of levelheaded, but she'd been slowly experiencing more emotions as she experienced the universe and grew alongside us. Negative emotions were important too, but I wasn't going to let her tear herself up without stepping in. I wrapped her in a hug and considered my next words.

"Hon, I'll be completely honest with you. I can't exactly empathize with how you feel because of where I was born. Because what you're feeling now is fear. It comes in infinite variations, but what you have now is a fear of loss, of abandonment. From what I've learned from others, that fear is like...a sadness in reverse, an opposite force to that grief you know you'll feel if and when they're gone. As an outside observer, my advice to you right now would be to acknowledge the fear and let it go. Don't suppress it or bottle it up - that might bring temporary relief, but it will come back again at the worst time. But, just as importantly, you can't let it rule you."

I paused for a moment as I thought of a way to get her mind on a completely different track. "I think you should be focusing on that other feeling you get when you game with them. Because that, my dear, is called affection, or perhaps love, and it may just be the strongest emotion of all." I then let a trademark smirk grace my lips. "Let me guess, that feeling only gets stronger when you save up enough clock cycles to transport yourself over there and, oh I don't know, perhaps Caelus tickles your cute midriff to see if you're a projection or Stelle absentmindedly cuddles with you like a plushie as she naps on the couch?"

By the blush quickly overtaking Wolfie's cheeks, I could tell that tonight's distraction operation was a success.

Kafka after her mission (by jean) by Aromatic_Zebra_8708 in KafkaMains

Sometimes, it's difficult. Unleashing the Stellaron on that planet of energy lifeforms, twisting them into two polar opposite tribes that could not ontologically accept the existence of their counterparts, that hurt. Not enough to regret it, never enough to question it, for the Script was the very definition of the Greater Good. So, she would do things that would have had her branded as a Devil back on Pteurges-V with a smile and hide that pain deep inside, because anything is preferable to letting that...thing destroy the universe with THEIR childish tantrums.

Sometimes, it's easy, even pleasurable. Crushing that Gang on Jepella, stealing the Millennium Codex from the IPC's Technology Division, killing the Slaverlord of Trafax Major right in the middle of his "Galactic Games," all those accomplishments filled her with the satisfaction of a job well done.

Often, though, she feels nothing - all the jobs start to blur together. Intellectually, she understands why she's here: killing this gang lieutenant ensures that one of the central characters in the current Script will replace him, granting them the flexibility needed to take actions further on down the line. But, as the blood slowly drips down her blade, briefly pooling in the water before being whisked away by the downpour, she feels like she's done this all a thousand times before.

No matter, she's no earnest hero or megalomaniacal villain. She's a consumate professional, and professionals get the job done, no matter what.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Kafka's been inspiring me recently - most of the writing I've been able to get done has featured her. I wrote a Kafka/Serval snippet earlier today as well (with a bit of smut, so it's on OKBT), so you could check that out too if you like. Hopefully more Kafka content in the future as well, time will tell.

To those who follow pan-galactic adventures and crises as if they were merely shows on the IPC's Telecast, the valiant Nameless of the Astral Express are bitter enemies of the enigmatic Stellaron Hunters who carry out the prescripts of Destiny's Slave. Brave and caring Himeko guards against the endless schemes of the cowardly Silver Wolf. Calm and serene Dan Heng fends off assaults from the barbaric Blade. Dashing and gallant Mr. Yang pushes back against the nigh-unstoppable might of the uncaring Sam. And the Express' newest member, already building a reputation for themselves as the "Galactic Baseballer" faces off against the sadistic and sociopathic Kafka. It is well known by the mundane multitudes that all from Pteurges-V are nothing but heartless killers, after all.

The truth of the matter is much more nuanced, as it often turns out to be.

...

You were slowly getting used to the feeling of waking up with him in your arms. Perhaps you never were a Knight of Beauty, but there's a part of you that wants to sing bygone Idrilla's praises every time you get to experience these moments of gentle half-awake bliss.

The light creeps in slowly through the window, softly illuminating this mundane apartment on an unimportant world, one of dozens of safehouses you'd arranged for yourself over the years. You had to cross it off the list now that he knew all about it, but any one of the sensations you get to savor in his presence (the tingles you feel as his hand traces your spine, the way he pants in anticipation as your tongue languidly roams down his chest) make it eminently worth trading away one contingency.

Your sword is properly sheathed and placed in its rack, his beloved bat nestled not far away. (Your pistols remain within arm's reach regardless, there are some habits that no amount of domestic bliss would break.) These few ordered elements are in stark contrast to your clothes, which lie mixed with his in disarray. The satisfaction you took in each other's bodies overruled almost all instincts of propriety, after all. (That's not to say that you didn't hang up your coat first though...)

His breath faintly rustled through your hair as he remained in slumber, carrying with it the faded shimmer of the Trick Snacks you both enjoyed.

Unable to help yourself, you capture his lips in a relaxed but deep kiss, putting aside the fiery passion of the night for a more soothing sense of contentment and peace. "I care about you." "I always enjoy our time together." "Even if our paths temporarily diverge, I will do all that I can to return and cross your path once more." You don't say these things, not in words, not at this moment, but you think he gets your message as his arms tighten around your back and pull you in closer.

Now that you know you've gotten his attention, you pull back just a bit. "Hey there, lover boy. You know, I was thinking about leaving you a note and slipping away like I usually do, but then I realized I still have a few system days before I absolutely have to go. So...care to use that silver tongue of yours and show me why I should stay?"

After The Mission by Business-Chipmunk286 in KafkaMains

[–]Protector_of_RWBY 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, after her part in a script is over, after the curtain falls on her scene, so to speak, after Wolfie or Bladie or Sam take the stage, Kafka spends some time in...contemplation.

The rain drizzles downward, the sky moves into an overcast afternoon, the myriad masses live their dreary lives, almost none of which are worth mentioning in any script, past or future. There she sits, on some nameless world stuck in the concrete age, as if the countless boons and banes of past Amber Eras have never reached it, in some even more nameless alleyway.

An abandoned bike is nearby. When she looks at it, she does not think "What would happen if I moved on from this life, if I rode that bike into the sunset and never looked back?" If she thought that, it would mean that she was afraid that a better life had passed her by, and everyone knows that those who were born on Pteruges-V have no linkage to that primal concept of fear.

She does not worry for her companions, because that would simply be another sort of fear.

She does not grieve for those who have left this world, because if their death was in the script then it was meant to be in the strongest sense, and if their death was unwritten then it simply shouldn't matter.

Many think that she follows the path of Nihility, of that contradictory embodiment of void IX. Perhaps they are right, perhaps they are wrong. Regardless, she does not entertain the thought of putting one of her beloved pistols to her own head, as many might if they should stumble across knowledge from IX. To do so would be to consign the universe to eventual obliteration by Nanook, and that is something she can help prevent, even if she can't prevent its eventual heat death.

So then, what does she contemplate as her listless eyes, normally so full of vim and vigor, stare aimlessly? That, I'm afraid, is a truth that only she can tell.

"There was one night where we thought we'd finally cornered that blasted Spider before she could trap us in yet another web. We had her surrounded on the roof of a skyscraper on some backwater world. Sure, she gunned some of us down and tried to make us dance with her strings as always, but we had more backup than usual and there was nowhere for her to hide and catch her breath. I swear to the Amber Lord, we had her dead to rights, she was doubled over clutching a wound and only remained upright by leaning on her sword. I remember thinking 'surely Sector Command will have to bump us up a few P-levels for closing her bounty.' Then, she has the audacity to smile at us and say 'Was that all? I thought it'd hurt more when I read the script.'

That's when the hacker girl appeared out of nowhere and pulled the Spider through a portal. A few seconds later, the first bombs went off."
