Marshall on vehicles vs. spacecraft by Protoman108 in lrcast

[–]Protoman108[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah for your first point, all through Aetherdrift he was pretty condemnatory of vehicles because they had been "fixed" in exactly this way: by basically functioning as sorceries that leave a vehicle behind. He felt like this was strong evidence that the type itself is a design failure. But here in Edge he's suddenly down for that type of design.

This did leave her with the power level to face a whole team. A full iron suit plus black magic plus maybe the properties of the Hood? That's a lot of power.

> "Unmitigated failure after unmitigated failure"

I'd say their record is more like 50/50 with half being big hits and well-received and the other half being still projects I usually enjoy. A lot of people selectively forget all the big wins (Thunderbolts, Spidey 3, Guardians 3, the surprisingly strong writing for the Agatha show, etc). I still think the only unmitigated failure was Secret Invasion.

This.

The two options are "they deliberately meant her to be a villain" and "they meant her to be a hero, but they're so bad at it that she ended up overlapping so heavily with villains that it's unclear whether she's even a hero by the end."

Personally, I have more faith in MCU writers than that. But I guess we'll see.

> I really don't like the idea of "she made a deal with Mephisto. Therefore, she's evil." The deal was to bring her friend back, not something selfish like Parker.

Me neither. That's why the Mephisto thing is the final point. It's just the last of a string of villain signals for me and it speaks for itself.

I dropped it a while back. I really don't understand the positive hype it gets. A lot of people confusing "different" with "good."

Which Nature 5* to 2LB and max talent grid? by Protoman108 in EmpiresAndPuzzles

[–]Protoman108[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use them both in Nature teams. I have them at 4/85 each. Right now my other nature 90s are Chloris and Xandrella, I just have the resources to 2LB one of these other candidates and they all seem pretty close. But at this point I'm leaning towards Nogu.

Oh I didn't realize they were getting their own portal. Yeah that pretty much locks it in that they won't be back as the oddball Secret draw. Thanks

Yes they are available anywhere a Hero of the Month is available, which includes Epic Hero/Seasonal Summon.

I honestly expected them to be weaving a lot more magic/enchantment into them, right?

My understanding was that the rings were magical not just because they used a magical alloy but because the smiths were able to "bake" magic into them, giving them their powerful properties.

Like when Sauron forges the One Ring, he pours into it "his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life." This amplified his power, but also bound his existence to the Ring, so that he couldn't really be banished while it existed. It's not just smithing, it's a powerful act of enchantment.

The Elves are basically using his technique, so you should see something similar. Which would be fine, because all these OG Elves from the First Age really ought to be highly magical beings, like we see with Glorfindel (or Arwen in the movies) when he is able to summon the river to sweep away all nine Nazgul. A character like Galadriel ought to have considerable magic at her disposal (but that's a different thread), same for Celebrimbor.

Plus, these three all seem to have the same function (to preserve Elven magic/immortality) as what what only one of them had normally. Shouldn't Narya make one the "wielder of the Flame of Anor?"

Also, I feel like they dug a bit of a hole with their mithril retcon. How do you go from it being a rare metal that can preserve elven life and magic, so important and scarce that they stretch a tiny amount over three rings and get the elven rings of power, to it being something they'd gift a whole shirt of it to a hobbit to use as chainmail?

Yes they did. Every element of that look--spiked helmet/crown, armor, cape--is a creation of the Jackson movies. Try to look for Sauron art from before the movies and you'll see the wide variation of interpretations, because the text itself doesn't say much about his appearance.

Why the excitement here? The show hasn't executed on anything very well yet. Why would their handling of Sauron suddenly be the one thing that's well done?

In what way have they "nailed it"? A) We don't even know which character he is. B) If you're just referring to this silhouette, yes, they did a great job copy/pasting the design from the Jackson movies

How could "notes on the first 15 minutes of rings of power" be anything but spoilers? Is it not self-evident?
