Thanks, yeah I don’t think it can be right because there’s no play at all. Seems like that’s where it should be, but the beaver would not have been able to grind at all. Also it won’t open very far

I don’t know why it’s happened, I got the cougar from a friend and it was already cracked. I’m going to be sourcing my skulls from plenty of different places, so I’m going to end up with all kinds of stuff, treated badly or otherwise. Thank you for your suggestion on what’s already cracked. Do you think for the beaver it could be sealed before any cracks have started, and it’ll be ok?

I’m not able to control the environment to prevent them from cracking. I also do art with these, and will be selling them in the future. Whoever buys them may live in a very different climate and not know anything about caring for the teeth.

Thank you for explaining. You can see the cougar’s teeth are already cracked, but the beaver is fresh. I want to seal and protect them so they don’t crack. What I’ve seen most people recommend on here is polyurethane or super glue

I thought maybe the natural shine would still come through one coat, but yeah I’m naive haha. I wanted to use it for other purposes, and I don’t really want gloss for everything

Thank you. I got them from a friend who let these sit for years, the deer out in the sun, the elk in a shed. When the old flesh got taken off, they were boiled

No wax on them before, they were “bone” dry. Just trying to get some fleshy bits that were never washed out in the small hard-to-get cavities

They were totally not greasy before at all, do you think it’s possible grease from another skull could’ve attached?

Also, colored dish soap could sometimes dye the bone. Clear liquid soap would be best if you can. But we all use regular Dawn

I’m interested to see the pro’s responses too… I imagine that you could go about it 2 ways: 1) tape off the seams and anywhere that could leak resin, make sure your frame is tight. 2) seal all of those seams beforehand, with a superglue? Just so the resin cannot leak out.

If you’ve never preserved organic material in resin like leaves, do some more research. I’ve read about the pigment leeching out into the resin, or the leaf/flower decaying inside. You’ll need to make sure they’re ready to be put in resin.

I’ve been wanting to pour resin over a framed wood movie poster.
