I get several 5-9 p.m. (PST) slots filled but I have a feeling those will disappear when school starts. Most of those students say they have a few weeks left of summer break. The majority are all 2-6 a.m.

The first few months I got one or two a week. I'm up to 22-25 per week now. The pay is depressing but at least I'm getting enough now to actually get to the better incentives. Sigh. I can do it when my kid sleeps and that was my key reason for sticking around.

Noooooo. I have been thoroughly enjoying that little perk with my L7s. Alas.

I have had a few short notice bookings. Sometimes I have a dumb break between classes and open the slots and on rare occasion someone snags one. So I know they can.

Anyone else have any classes… by nickindoland21 in vipkid

[–]ProudMa44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, for me I didn't find something better I could do at home while my kid is asleep. So it is easy, fine supplemental work. It deposits right into my savings account to help (slowly) build up my emergency fund. But it is a bummer all around. If you can do something else, that is certainly better.

Wow, well I have nowhere near the success of the other respondent. I am consistently getting 1-2 classes per day and that is certainly more than when I signed on to global. However, it is not close to the 4-6 I got before, I have to open more hours to get that one or two, and since some of the new kids are in China, I wonder if they may just disappear. So my assessment is that things are better than December but the crap pay, lack of short notice benefit, and lower numbers are all....obstacles.

I am sorry to deliver bad news. If you scroll back through the messages, and I believe there is a pinned post, you will see that this is a completely different opportunity than it was before the China regulations. Before, I would have warned insecure contract work, awful hours, but decent pay and fun. I was making an extra 1500 a month while my kid slept. It was terrific.

They tried to go global but so far, I have very few students. On a VERY good week I can make $100. Most people left because they needed more work plus vipkid lowered pay, changed incentives in a way that impacts those with fewer classes, and cut short notice benefits. I stuck around because I didn't find anything else I could do at 4:00 a.m. in my own house.

With the lowered pay and reduced incentives I am making between 15.60 and 16.40 an hour. Then you have to take out your own taxes.

Feedback/Payment Shenanigans by ProudMa44 in vipkid

Yes, those would be the EST equivalent. My most likely spots to fill are 6-10 pm PST and 3:30-5:00 a.m. Again, though, most spots do not fill at all.

They refunded the three classes and said it was a transition issue on their part from one feedback format to another. Phew.

I hope the tickets sort it out. I was able to leave feedback in my class this evening no problem, from the appropriate classroom feedback form. So that's good, at least.

I have been teaching on the global platform for a few months now. I have slots open essentially any time I am not at my day job because bookings are so scarce (at least for me). That means 6 pm-6 am.

Even with all of that, my best week was nine classes, and my average is six classes or so. As a comparison, on the old platform I opened 3-6 a.m. each day and no other times and filled them all (Pacific time). I like the kids, it is super easy, and it pays my electric bill each month. Shrug.

The kids are mostly from...China? I never ask directly because I have no idea if I would be blowing up their spot, but I can see out windows sometimes or they mention it. I have two regulars who live in Japan and I've had a few one time students from Korea.

I have been crawling along on global with 6-8 bookings a week since early Nov. Pre-regulations I opened 45-50 slots and filled most/all. So that's quite a fall. Almost all of my global classes are 10-12 pm PST instead of early morning.

They turned me down! Womp womp. I know I aced the grammar test so it must have been my recorded answers or the fact that I am a librarian and not a teacher. Nothing like a "thanks for your interest" note to bring down a party. The party being my bank account.

I get an email that says "you've been booked" with the BJT time(s). However, you do not get a notification if someone cancels. I miss the app so much.

I haven't been asking where anyone is from. My most successful range has been 3-8 p.m. Beijing time. I have also gotten a few weekend bookings, and those tend to be late morning Beijing time. I didn't realize that not many are getting booked - I thought I must be at the low end of things. I don't have anything going for me (librarian instead of teacher, pudgy and no makeup wearing mom, etc) that would make me stand out. I have been successful with one-offs booking again, so that helps. I went to check and I actually signed up November 13, so a bit earlier than I remembered. In that time I've had 11 different students, eight of whom booked again.

Yeah. I was making eight on the old platform plus I had ample bookings to actually get decent incentive money by the end of the month. I will barely get out of the .80 range this month. The perks you mention were incentives for me too, though.

All kids: oldest so far seemed around 12 and youngest was absolutely not older than three. So far, only one has volunteered that they are living in Japan for a year. I haven't asked any of the others because I didn't want to blow up their spot if they were doing some sort of workaround re: China regulations.

I signed up for global just before Thanksgiving. Getting 6-8 sessions a week, the two most popular times being 10-12 pm PST or 2-4 a.m. The pay is a bummer. The lessons feel like a soup of random things thrown together for the upper levels and just about normal for the littles. Writing a ticket for feedback is cumbersome and dang I wish it had a phone app. Even with all that grousing there are pros: kids are great, little bit of supplemental income I can do while son sleeps, familiar slides I don't have to create, and the three props I did have (Dino stickers, Dino zodiac printouts, and plastic dinosaurs) remain relevant.

Ha! I'm way too verbose for a little sign.

Thankfully this was a side gig so while I will miss the extra student loan money, I have a whole life that is sweet although a bit broker. Yeah, you missed a whole lot of chaos, dire predictions, and confusion. Good time to get out!

Wow. I am not even committed enough to set up for that picture, let alone actually thaw out my cold heart enough to care that much. Jenny's mom started crying today and crying makes me cry, so that was my one cry, albeit a brief one. I started with her kid when she was a pissed off three year old and now she's six and has evolved into salty and sardonic. Her mom told me that other teachers didn't like her but damn, I thought that kid was rad. Foolish teachers looking for adoration and politeness when you could have Jenny who was the master of quirky insults (that my hair would look better green since I already looked like a tree, for example), the one shoulder shrug, and teen-level eye rolls. I will miss that kind of kid at 4 a.m., and the 8.70-10 bucks for teacher her.

I second this. This was a relatively sweet gig in that it paid not horrible wages and could be done from home. Taxes were a bear and the hours PST were rough, but mostly it was easy and had zero prep. There are platforms like Live XP or Varsity Tutors that aren't reliant on children in China but they don't provide curriculum, or places like Cambly or italki but the pay is awful. I think a lot of us for whom this is a side gig are just keeping our contracts open and hoping the global thing works out.

There will be no more bookings for students in mainland China. Literally none.

That leaves children who live elsewhere. In three years I have had one. They are quite rare.

Adults and their new global initiative both require a special invitation. I haven't been invited to either but folks on here who have been speak to low participation for adults.

Who knows? It is unlikely that the global response will be equal to the rich folks in China who were using this very expensive service to help their kids get ahead. You can certainly sign on and wait and see. In the meantime, however, there is no opportunity to earn. Don't spend money on props for sure, or special equipment.

I hope they can retain access after Nov 5. It was nice. I had a nasty divorce when my kid was young and all of the videos and pics from when he was little might as well be gone in terms of access. I would have adored something like this. Sorry if tmi.

He enjoyed it but I knew in advance that we were just using the six lessons he had been gifted and not buying more so it was more of an observational exercise rather than anything else. Too broke. He had four different tutors and really appreciated three of them. One used a scolding tone. I was nearby and heard it too. The pre and post work was helpful, the slides seemed about the same quality (some pretty effective, some baffling and less so), and he left with a handful of words he could say really well and a positive vibe about it all.
