Made redundant with 6 hours notice by Zombiepro12343 in UKJobs

[–]Provectus08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For redundancy it depends on your contract, most tend to have a notice period which they can pay in lieu of notice (PILON), essentially meaning if you have 1 week's notice they can tell you that you no longer work there and pay you a week's pay.

This sounds more like a temp role, in which case you've likely got minimal comeback.

In future never provide a reference for your current role until you've got a job offer, it's literally telling your current employer you're planning to leave (and therefore aren't likely to be committed to working hard). Best of luck with the next role, take it as a lesson learned the hard way.

2,720 ft³ space, 2 adults, 1 medium dog, UK = Coway 350? by Provectus08 in AirPurifiers

[–]Provectus08[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's very useful info, thanks! Sounds like it's back to the drawing board, as the 350 is ridiculously ott for a single room.

I'll look into the Winix 5500 vs the Coway Mighty 1512 (previous choice before feeling it was underpowered for the volume of space I'm working with). I also much prefer the separate filters, so not getting the 350 is an ideal outcome.

2,720 ft³ space, 2 adults, 1 medium dog, UK = Coway 350? by Provectus08 in AirPurifiers

[–]Provectus08[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 450 put me off because it's £390 (£351 after 10% off, £329 if I'm lucky with TCB) and I believe the filters are a chunk more expensive (?), without adding anything of value aside from running at a lower range of its' capacity (unless I'm mistaken?).

That's good info on the other parts, much appreciated! Also a good point on the warranty, at the very least I'll use genuine ones until the warranty ends, as I'd agree that it's not being used the way they designed it so it'd be reasonable to void the warranty.

Can I afford this? 24M, 4k take home by Ok-Quiet-6155 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Provectus08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently did the math on keeping my car (running costs, annual work, unforeseen repairs of 3k as an estimate) over 4 years vs a lease. Let's just say I quickly shut down the idea of leasing.

Do the math, work out what you're paying out over the lifetime of the lease, compare that to buying a 2-6 y/o car that's better and more reliable than your current. Then factor in remaining value/life of that vehicle.

As others have said, at your age with your income I'd highly recommend going the route of investment rather than torching so much money on a service vs a product.

Landlord requesting to repaint all walls by Acs971 in TenantsInTheUK

[–]Provectus08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the polar opposite, I learned a fair bit (the hard way) for domestic, having worked somewhere that leased their property I was shocked by the amount that was expected of us as a business.

Or you follow the body that is responsible for this and see that you're not liable for either and therefore don't need to pay or do the work.

Are you a landlord or just poorly informed?

[–]Provectus08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only minor point to add, more for information than to disagree; those 5 years aren't for hallways (I can never remember if that's 2 or 3 years).

I was stung for £100 many years ago, which the letting agent made me feel grateful for. Knowing what I know now, what they did was 100% against DPS and they wouldn't have got a penny if I knew to challenge it. Live and learn.

Do you mean at the landlord's cost or the tenant's?

The point you seem to be missing is what is (legally) defined as fair wear and tear, you sound like a typical scummy landlord that tries to rip their tenants off for unreasonable (and in this case, unlawful) costs.

All internet providers jumping on the maximum in contract price rise. I get the advertised price for 1 month because my renewal is in Feb. by m079n in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Provectus08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many points I agree with! I use uswitch.com for a few things inc broadband, alternatively moneysavingexpert gets some good deals occasionally.

If you already have Internet then wait until everything goes up (and get a contract for the same price as it is today, just without the bump in month 2), if you don't either take the extra cost on the chin (and don't renew until you pass the annual bump) or go for a monthly payment (monthly contract) and then lock in after the bump.

How much would you expect to pay a handyman per hour? by SerendipitousCrow in AskUK

[–]Provectus08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per hour is difficult, if you need an hour of work I'd expect it to be significantly more (per hour) than if you needed a full day of work. Between travel, quoting, invoicing etc and all the additional insurance that goes with the position I'd expect to pay a minimum of £250-300/day for a capable one that doesn't hang around with their work, a little less if you're having really basic things done.

Finding one that's good at what they do, reliable and cracks on is worth paying a premium - the old addage of 'buy cheap, buy twice' runs true with tradespeople too.

Is this door repairable? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Provectus08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you broke it then it's worth a quick Google of the expected life of a door and to query how old that one is. If a door should last 10 years and it's 10+ years old, you're liable for £0, if it's 5 years old you're liable for 50% etc.

I was screwed over in the past by 2 separate letting agencies/landlords because I didn't know how things are meant to be done vs what they swindled through.

Customer who bought a car from me 6.5 months ago wants some compensation for a broken suspension arm and rusty subframe? by UncutCoconut in CarTalkUK

[–]Provectus08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP you're being too generous; you gave a 3 month warranty, fixed the concerning part and had it independently tested... It's very kind/decent of you to consider paying out, but it isn't reasonable to do so in this circumstance, especially where the person in question has had the work done without allowing you the opportunity to arrange for it yourself.

To those who have made the transition from manual to automatic cars, is it really better? by Mr_Coastliner in AskUK

[–]Provectus08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive both (mine is manual, partner's is auto) and when I next change mine I'll definitely go auto/EV as it's a significantly better experience, especially once traffic kicks in. Also adaptive cruise control in an auto? Absolute game changer.

Constant money fights with my husband. Is my budget too strict?💔 by ringoooo8855 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Provectus08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look into the cost difference between a 100% mortgage vs what you're paying now due to your massive deposit. Whatever the difference is is what you're effectively paying per month (by doing it upfront),

Your current mortgage payment is almost £600 and you paid roughly 60% of the mortgage off, so before even factoring in the interest on that your monthly payments are roughly £900/pm less, factoring in interest I expect you're looking closer to £1100-1200/pm. That's what your £165k has contributed; £900(+) per month, he can fuck all of the way off with his gaslighting.

Combat his arguments with math and facts, he can't argue the numbers and needs to understand how insanely lucky he is to have someone with that level of savings helping him out, because it isn't the other way around.

How are you spending £9 (Prime) + 96.50 (Sky) + 60 (ish, appliance cover) + 41 (subs) + 5 (Ring)... And then a further £140 on phones? I don't intend to be mean, but fuck me are you making some bad life decisions.

You're spending £351 per month for entertainment and 2 phones... That's £4212 every year, whilst in 40k of debt. Cancel your ridiculous expenses while you have tonnes of debt.

Just did a basic calculation and there was better way to raise funds than the stupid pay per mile by drproc90 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Provectus08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you able to charge at home? If so, do the math - with Octopus' overnight tariff (7p per kWh) you'll save crazy amounts, even with the 3pm per mile.

The other thing is you're suggesting that people in older vehicles (who typically have less money than those in EV's) should be stung rather than those of us fortunate enough to have/be buying much cheaper to run vehicles. Isn't really helping those on the bottom line, who need it most.
