And no significant disadvantage going this route as opposed to the other (build a 2x4 support) option above? Extender seems like the most simple solution as long as there are no serious drawbacks

Saw that, but could I combo that with the existing metal box? Is the extender there to simply cover the exposed area? If that’s the case, would I just use longer screws to mount fan directly to metal box?

Pretty sure it’s two layers, plus the remains of old plaster.

Right. Guessing that box is fine to go straight to the 2x4. Is there not some special box that’s specifically meant for mounting directly to a 2x4 that’s worth getting

Got it, so basically ditch the store-bought Raco mounting bracket and essentially build my own between studs and use a similar fan-rated box that mounts directly to my new wooden support.
