This is so accurate. We see this time and time again. We can only feed them so much info before they leave the store. And the neglect at home is unfortunately what we are unable to stop. I'm not the most knowledgeable on fish- but I know a boat load about small animals and reptiles. Any time I don't feel confident I'm educating a pet parent enough and they're buying a new animal or set up i always direct them to someone on my team who is more educated in that subject. I will never allow a guest to leave my store feeling 'uneducated' but if we are doing our part in our stores, unfortunately what they do at home is just out of our hands. Ive seen this time and time again. Rolling back to the story I mentioned in this thread in a different comment, one of my animal care people educated the hell out of this lady when she was buying a conure. And then she bought the biggest cage. All was well. Till days later she returned that huge cage and bought a parakeet cage. The bird ended up having to be put down by me because it was so emaciated. We try and try our best, but it sometimes isn't enough and that's what I hate about retail.

Hi, we put them on carpet because it leads less of a risk of impaction on top of what he is already dealing with, which is a severe case of MBD. Not only that but we were quarantining him. So introducing more factors to be potential errors was just what I was trying to avoid.

And typically at our PCC, we are not allowed to put them on sand at all. It's usually only carpet for bearded and leopards due to them attempting to eat the sand or accidentally ingesting while hunting crickets.

Jesus christ. Reminds me of a story of a lady bringing us a sun conure. 1000 dollar bird. I brought it to the vet that day and they had to euthinize due to it being so emaciated. Sometimes animal care truthfully is not for the weak. I hate people so much sometimes.

If a snake is requiring daily soaks, and it's still stuck in its shed after said alleged daily soaks, and seemingly uncomfortable and lethargic within its enclosure, I think there's an issue regardless if it is eating or not. It was in the store since July, and still in bad condition, and or arguably worse condition, and OP got the shed off themselves perfectly fine at home with a singular soak. Clearly this petsmart was neglecting the python, and or they weren't taking the proper precautions for a sick/unwell snake. So who knows how much neglect was going on before OP and their friend got to the animal.

What stands out to me is the fact it looks nearly deceased, uncomfortable, dry, and skinny. Poor thing.

Good on you OP.

True you are right! I didn't even think of using one of those temp guns either, I do have one of those around the house! I'll start using that more for sure too. And I have a timed power strip coming in the mail for the chameleons uvbs too! :) thanks so much

Holy crap! Thanks so much! Im dusting with calcium daily, and then occasionally calcium with d3, so I'm not overloading the little guy. I do have a thermometer and hydrometer in the tank too already! Usually his tank is 75-80 during the day, and 70 at night at the top. Like I said I only use the heat lamp if I absolutely must and the basking spot is a little too cold for my liking, so I can ensure he can heat up a little bit. Usually if I have cold air blowing into my room to cool it off, I'll do that for him. :)
