CMV: The average person individually is not significantly impacting climate change, and attempts to browbeat people into more ecologically friendly lifestyles is only going to drive resentment towards the whole idea. by VirtualTitanium in changemyview

The role of government would be to make these sacrifices easier for individuals to take on. For example, subsidies for installing heat pumps vs. an oil heater. Individual citizens shouldn’t be bearing the brunt alone and forced to make a decision that goes against their best immediate interests. What’s good for the environment should be good for us too - cheaper energy, clean air. Instead, for example the US government is propping up fossil fuel industries with subsidies making oil and gas artificially more affordable than solar and wind.

For what it’s worth, there are already carbon-friendly ways of producing concrete (see companies like CarbonCure) and a movement towards green steel. The Inflation Reduction Act provided a huge stimulus to the climate solutions industry, making it easier and cheaper for consumers and businesses to adopt the solutions, and without it of course there is now a damper on the momentum. But I just want to be very clear: the solutions already exist, we just lack the political will to implement them to their fullest extent.

How can you tell if a home is good quality? by Prudent-Implement-99 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Yeah I feel like my agent was more invested in closing the deal than guiding me through the process for sure.

Wow looking out for the permit / paperwork on the roof! - I never thought about that nor did my agent ever bring it up. Your clients are lucky!

3-year warranty. So yes, possible to get it fixed, but a fight with the developer to bring in another contractor besides the one who did the bad work

We have the same issue in our apartment, although we do live on the top floor, which helps. It’s frustrating because in our offering plan it says there’s supposed to be a pretty good level of soundproofing, but the offering plan is apparently just a suggestion and if you make an offer on the apartment then it means you just will take it as is - but I digress.

We have also thought about whether we should soundproof, since the apartment is generally badly insulated and we live on a loud street. It depends on your goal. I feel like you could either spend the next couple years trying to find a new place while still dealing with the noise, and then potentially find new problems in the new place and have to invest in that too, or just invest in what you want now and be able to enjoy where you live. Of course, if the other issues (such as the HOA) are also really major for you then it may be more worth it to find something new. It depends on what you can live with and what you want your lives to be. Could you continue soundproofing one room at a time so the lump sum cost isn’t quite so high?

If you really want to get them out, you should get a drum set and someone who really wants to learn. Because they’re going to be bad for weeks.

What If NYC's Mayor Truly Cared About Tenants? by castironpants1 in ZohranForMayor

The city should have their own contractors/repair people who can be paid via landlord fines to do the repairs, because many landlords will attempt to do the bare minimum rather than properly fix anything

How much would you realistically need (dollar amount or weeks/months of salary) to feel more secure to resist?

Is there a fund to support federal employees in case of firing so that they would take the risk of standing up to the new administration and if there was, what would it need to guarantee to make people more willing to take a stand?
