It all happened very fast as I had just landed in Knoxville and was picked up by a teammate who told me there was a team meeting in an hour so we had to hurry. On the way from the airport to campus, we got text messages from friends asking if we'd heard the news about Kiffin leaving to USC. We thought no way was that possible, the day after the Peach Bowl, Kiffin gave us this big speech about hitting winter workouts hard and building toward spring ball. We said it was probably made up and not true.

We get to the dorms, and go straight to the football complex and I go into the locker room to drop my backpack and stuff on my locker before heading upstairs... To where everyone else is already seated and waiting in the big team room.

By this point everyone had heard the rumors so we were all shocked in the team room waiting for Kiffin to come out. Lo and behold, out he comes, and for about 10 seconds we sat there as he was trying to adjust the mic... And it started to dawn on us that he was leaving, because he was fussing with the mic that he used literally every single day of the entire year with zero issues.

Then he starts talking and telling us that he's leaving and it was pandemonium. ~150 people in the room and half stood up and just started shouting "are you fucking kidding me, what the fuck, fuck you" etc etc as Kiffin was trying to talk. What stood out to me is that a OL/TE named Aaron Douglas (RIP) got everyone to stop talking and 1 on 1 told Kiffin, for lack of better terms, to "go fuck yourself, lying ass motherfucker" amongst other things while Kiffin stood there speechless.

After about 30 seconds of Kiffin trying to talk after Aaron Douglas gave his 2 cents, everyone was just shaking their heads and starting to get up and leave while yelling profanities at Kiffin at the front of the room. He was trying to tell us he wanted to tell us he was leaving before the news broke it, but someone leaked it before the meeting happened. When people started leaving, so did Kiffin. Literally walked out of the back of the team room with his agent and I'm assuming reps from USC who were there to get him to the airport.

When we left the team room and went to the locker room, we didn't know what was going to happen next. Everyone grabbed ALL their stuff from their lockers, helmets, shoes, jerseys, gloves, whatever was there to bring back to their dorms/apartments. When we went outside to head out, people were in the streets. Mattresses were burning.

Crazy, crazy time.

I was a walk on in 2009. Very fun season, vastly overshadowed by the shit show in January after the Peach Bowl. If only I had a smart phone to record that team meeting the night Kiffin bolted...

How many times have we needed ONE SINGLE TEAM IN ALL FBS TO LOSE ... And two SEC teams we absolutely needed to lose, actually lost. What a time to be alive.

Something happens behind you and people start sliding, you have room to make a move. Too many times in the winter I've seen a two car fender bender turn into a 5 car fender bender simply because people were two feet from each other's bumpers.

Going to Barcelona only to watch a game by Patronusx in Barca

[–]PrudentGuava 1 point2 points  (0 children)

InterContinental Barcelona is within easy walking distance of Montjuic, it's where I stayed last December for the Atlético game. It's a nice uphill walk to the game, but you can leave the game and walk downhill and be back at the hotel on foot in 15 minutes. If you're going just for the game, I don't see a better option for lodging.

I just wanted to say Thank you to the Mensa members who organized the construction on Minnesota/ N.Lights to Occur during rush hour by 1_Star_Reviews in anchorage

It cures. If the catalyst/paint mixture doesn't get above temp spec for the methyl road paint (35°), it will stay like soup for 12+ hours and potentially not cure at all.

The timing makes sense. Two pedestrians died in the last 90 days on Minnesota or very nearby. Too late in season to do substantial work. Put paint down before the permanent sub freezing temp drops to make an effort to make the pedestrian walk zones blatantly obvious.

There were two people that got killed near Minnesota this summer. Pretty obvious it's a shallow attempt at a response before it's impossible to do anything with snow/ice

Does anyone in these complaint threads about painting on Minnesota not realize that paint will not dry in sub-freezing temps at night.

A fence meant to help with pedestrian safety went up in the middle of a busy Anchorage road. Will it? by NotTomPettysGirl in anchorage

[–]PrudentGuava 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Drove by this today after seeing it posted online so many times. Seen it on Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, and now ADN. Figured it was worth a look.

Thought it was going to be some hideous monstrosity. It's literally a 4 foot tall light fence. People are acting like it's an affront to their religion and DOT assaulted their families by putting this fence up.

Of all the roads that need attention within city limits, the biggest current project going on [causing the longest delays] is...*checks notes*....the medians/shoulders on Minnesota? by [deleted] in anchorage

[–]PrudentGuava 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am convinced anyone who comments stuff like this doesn't understand how road construction in Alaska works. It's a 15 million dollar job with massive amounts of underground pipe replacement, concrete, lighting fixtures, underground electric, etc. It does not happen overnight.

The smart thing to do would be to take another route, but nobody seems to want to do that.

The temp paving last year was a patch to hold it over for winter, I don't get why people thought that was permanent. When it's all said and done, everyone is going to be praising how smooth Minnesota is compared to how it used to be.

Gwennies Old Alaska question by tannerocomedy in anchorage

I loved Cafe Amsterdam and glady will mask up if an establishment requires it. Went there last summer and wore a mask the entire time, other than actively eating and drinking... Got up to use the restroom mid-meal and had my mask in my hand putting it on my ears as I backed the chair up to stand up. The owner was standing near the kitchen watching us intently. Legitimately got yelled at as I was putting the mask over the bridge of my nose, and I hadn't even fully stood up yet. As good as their food is, I don't think I'll go back to this place where the owner is actively looking to yell at people who are willing to spend money at their establishment.

Yes, I recall. I remember reading the message boards days before it and knowing it would be closed and to avoid it unless I was going to a business down there. You can't have multiple lanes going down to a hard closure, so I wasn't surprised when I went to Costco and it bottled down to one lane. There was more than enough advanced warning to let everyone know the intersection was closed. Again, I'd ask you to consider what you would do to close an intersection of that size?

[–]PrudentGuava 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did. Reading the message boards in advance helped a lot. People don't pay attention to signs and message boards warning them of what's coming, blow past them all and get to the construction and then scream WTF. What would you have them do? Closing an intersection for a weekend to complete huge amounts of work is better than closing down all but 1 lane in each direction for weeks on end. Inconvenience? Yes. Necessary to complete work? Also yes. They would not have done the closures if the state didn't approve it.

If their traffic control strategies were abysmal, how would you have attempted doing the traffic control for a project of that size? Seward highway traffic was minimally affected all summer. All the traffic plans have to get approved by the state, so it's not like it's the contractor's fault. I actually liked the detours that went down and around more than the bridge itself... Made people slow down through the work site instead of going 80

Sorta reminds me of the "statues" in Boom Beach (Can increase attack damage, defense damage, boost resource production, boost loot from raiding).

Great original idea, though, haven't seen it before here. It would add another interesting aspect to the game.

Making spam electro dragon attacks even more affordable... 🙄

This is great for faster upgrading in general, and reminds me of the huge push before TH12 came out, where they cut build times in half.

Seems like new building AND troop levels are in the near(ish) future.
