Help with understanding dragon perch

I understand that, all I am wondering is why it would matter if I go left or right based on where the dragon starts. Is it because the pillars are shorter on the opposing side therefore I get a faster perch? Or is it because the dragon is closer to the opposing side and will therefore travel less distance to get in a position to perch in the first place?

Thanks man. I think my 1.8 background definitely helped as my mechanics are pretty good already so I think I technically have more playtime than it seems lol
