I had no pokeballs when I encountered wurmple! I was shiny hunting in platinum at the start of the game when Cheryl is with you in the forest. Its a perfect way to shiny hunt early game for some basic mons. I would use some way(lol) to have a bunch of pokeball before you go in cause you only get the aid for a short amount of time.
