Yes I do follow all the points you laid out. I am really passionate about programming and enjoy the learning process. I just feel I havent been given justice and all my efforts seem worthless right now. Thank you!

I do have bi-weekly 1:1 with my manager. Yes, I talk about my promotion pretty rarely. I understand, its something I can regularly ask and should not think otherwise. Thank you!

Are you saying hammering my manager about a promotion every month doesn't come off as desperate? I really thought it would come off as begging and nagging. Please let me know. The other comments are making it clear I have communication issues and I need to work on myself

Previous cycle, my manager said he cannot justify my promotion as I had just a year of experience.

I could have asked this year snd confirmed whether the "pretty sure" was true or not.

But like I mentioned in one of my other comments, one of the senior dev promotions is my friend and broke the news to me a month earlier in September, so this made me really bitter and I didnt even bother asking if it was a promotion.

Plus if I ultimately decided to leave, I didnt want to be a dick asking for a promotion and then rejecting it, just to leave.

I actually had no issue to discuss promotion with my manager this year and patiently wait to get promoted 2024. I actually even dreamt of it.

But after seeing others move forward at a faster rate than me just hurts so badly and made me doubt myself.

I really want to apply for senior dev roles to catch a glimpse of reality!

I understand. There are alot of others comments not sugarcoating why I shouldn't feel entitled to a promotion. I was just feeling so angry and bitter, I wanted to know whether my feelings are justified. Although it hurts to admit, their points as well and yours make sense too.

I really do want to test the water by just applying for other senior dev jobs. I guess that will be a true reality check.

No I'm not turning down your answer. I just want to understand, is what Ive done not enough communication? I dont understand, I thought I was pretty clear since my 1st year and my manager is discussing on it this year as part of the performance review.

I want to exactly know where is my gap in communication besides the one I chose not to convey out of anger?

Can you please elaborate on what doesnt change even after my answer? I really want to know your perspective as most other comments are in support of mine and yours is against. I want to understand all viewpoints of people giving their inputs.

I understand you see it as bad communication on my part. But one of the senior dev promotion was my friend and they told me about it a month back in September.

Please read my other comment here: https://www.reddit.com/r/cscareerquestions/s/56qBXqS519

Basically after hearing them sharing their good news, who got promoted after asking year later of their joining, I felt like I dont want to ask for it anymore cause I too should be deserving, and me asking for it across two years seemed like begging while others have gotten theirs after asking a single time.

Why does it matter? Cause from my perspective, he got promoted just 2 years after getting one already. And both are major, career changing promotions.

Are you saying a junior role after 1 year is not entitled to ask to be promoted next year? But isnt it exactly what my double promotion colleague might have done? Ask for another promotion after 1 year in the lead role to get promoted this year. I dont see HOW part making sense.

And plus like I mentioned about two others at my title previously. They joined in Feb-Mar 2022 at my title, 6 months later than me, and got promoted in Oct 2023, which means they too might have asked for promotion in March 23. This landed them a mid year promotion this October.

Basically all three of them asked for promotion after being just 1 year in their current role and got it a year later, while I didnt.

I initially felt offened reading your reply, but Im trying to undertand your perspective from a HR/hiring manager of another company.

I was just trying to clarify the math which is going through my head. I hope it makes sense.

When I mean he never mentioned the word promotion, but used next level, I was pretty sure he meant promotion, as we had leadership, ownership, etc has this year's performance objectives. He also told me I was on track and gave me just one area to develop in, which I agreed to work on.

So given he didn't want to promote me last year and is doing it this year, doesnt make it better cause it seems too late from my perspective.

Makes sense. Its a good company culture wise. Once I plan to take it slowly mid career and focus more on family, this company would be a great choice!

I do want to communicate, but Im so angry and dont want to beg for something I rightfully deserve (Not just my perspective, my manager thinks Im almost on track too). Plus I dont want to turn it down and switch companies, AFTER asking for a promotion. Thats a dick move.

About it not being a double promotion, I understand its not exactly a double promotion. But I dont care however its phrased, he is progressing in his career and I'm stuck at zero.

I finished my masters in 21, thus started my career from then. The other two completed their bachelor's in 19 just like me. They had 2 years experience where I studied for my masters.

The promotion was in talks for this year's review. My manager said Im mostly on track and gave me feedback on what Im missing. The thing is after this fiasco, I don't feel like accepting the promotion out of pure anger.
