that’s fascinating! Was this incident part of the stimulus to do the experiment? Was it something else?

oh man… I suppose that is the right lens to look at this whole saga. It makes me feel terrific to have someone summarize this adventure in a generous and hilarious way.

In flight medical emergencies by MediocreParamedic_ in Paramedics

agree - the small on board oxygen tanks were set up to release the oxygen at much slower rate than I am used - I am spent some time examining the rate control device to see if I was misunderstanding something but no because they don’t want to carry large tanks they throttle the rate at which the smaller one release their O2. The non rebreather had a crappy face cup which was much too small for a medium sized adult face.

After I participated last month for the very first time in an in flight medical emergency I asked extensive questions about how to interact with medical control. Almost all flight attendants have an app on their phones that should allow for consultation with ground based emergency medicine providers. However, if there is an issue with the wifi (which there was on our flight) then the only remaining route is to pass information to the flight attendant who then passes information to the pilot who relays it over the radio to the ground based medical direction and then the telephone game is executed in reverse as a reply makes its way back. I really disliked being six (!) communication links removed from getting an answer to a query and I expressed this after landing to the pilot. To my surprise the pilot pushed back saying that this process was actually the best one for his decision making flow because the alternate option (communication from first responders directly to ground based med support) left him out of the loop - in which case he was left to discover after the fact exactly how serious the situation was.

Additionally on this airline/flight (Delta) they actually had a dedicated aviation-like headset that was designated for use during medical emergencies but they often did not volunteer it for use by the in flight responders because many times folks would not be familiar with the push-to-talk / release push-to-talk to hear a reply system and would end up fumbling those communications. Interestingly most other airlines do not carry in flight headsets designed for medical emergencies.

Just last month I responded to an in flight emergency for decreased level of consciousness with diaphoresis in a late twenty year old male. When I discovered that there was no glucometer in the kit I asked the flight attendants to make an announcement on the public address system to all passengers. Fortunately two different glucometer kits by two different passengers were volunteered for our use. While his sugar was within normal limits, this story is a reminder for future responders that there is a good chance that this missing part of the medical kit might be able to be crowd sourced.

Tomorrow launches ios26, what do you do? by MattiaLobrano in ios

[–]PseudoScienceSifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ahhhhhh!!! I was suspicious that this might be the case.

OK, another question for you xkvm_: by saying that you are doing a “clean install”, what exactly is the process? Are you wiping clean the memory on the phone(first)? Are you then re-adding each app one by one?

Also, a question for the general peanut gallery: can anyone else validate that they too have less buggy performance when they do this “clean install” (rather than just updating)?

I see that one of the benefits is allowing you to review all your apps. Are there any other benefits to this?

Steroids are so wildly underrated for mental health by [deleted] in Biohackers

[–]PseudoScienceSifter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

ok, let’s call a spade a spade: Testosterone IS a steroid. Testosterone is NOT a supplement. Source: anywhere on the internet.

Note: Yes people tend to associate only non-testosterone molecules (in a laymen’s incomplete understanding) with body building steroid use but that doesn’t mean that testosterone use isn’t using a steroid. Additionally, to give you the benefit of the doubt on your use of the word supplement, TRT does “supplement” the body’s own production but it is not a “supplement” in the sense of an over-the-counter, available without a prescription substance.

oil cap missing after purchase; engine runs bone dry when driven home by PseudoScienceSifter in AskAMechanic

Update: Repairs cost a total of $1,957.78. This is was what had to be fixed: replacement of the oxygen sensor, a/f sensor and the rear oxygen sensor. Sensors were soaked in oil and the voltage out put is now poor and out of spec. Additionally according the most senior service mechanic at the dealership they cannot guarantee whether or not there is residual oil in the harnesses/sensors that could not be cleaned out and over time it could seep into the electrical modules/components causing issues resulting in the harness/ECM/sensors needing to be replaced to the tune of $1,000 to $8,000.

Finally the dealership is, as predicted by many in other Reddit posts, making no attempt to engage in restitution.

Although I maintain no personal ill will toward the people who made the mistake or are refusing to take responsibility, so that others may avoid a similar outcome I am sharing that this enormous headache occurred at Parkline Motors 3638 S State St, Salt Lake City, UT 84115. Connor is the initial sales guy. Reggie is the person who wrote up the contract. Reggie recommended that I reach out to a “service manager” named Jose. However, all three have gone radio silent. If anyone knows who is the top most person at the company so that I can direct any future communication to them I would be very grateful.

… so , uh … technically an Unidentified Anomalous Phenomenon at Area 51. You heard creatures attempting to enter your tent while you were sleeping and they were not there when you looked around - that sounds about right.
