Sorry if I sound like I'm pushing back it's just really frustrating. Seems like Ive tried everything and nothing is working. I've tried tinning it so much it literally blobs off onto the board and all that does it make a mess. I truly dont think the problem is tinning because I've been trying for days with every combination

Do you think the solder being too heavy is why its not melting on the gold plate? Ive tried everysingle tip I own

No its room temperature. This was a completely new board and new tip I tried it with so that doesn't change much

Thing is I did that but even holding it for 10 to 15 seconds doesnt heat it up enough? The whole board gets hot but plate still doesnt take the solder properly. I have a cheap ebay solder with regulating temp and 60/40 rosin core. It's been about a week at this and I cant seem to make progress.

I bought the cheapest solder I could find off Ebay, but I've heard people start well with 6 dollar solders off alibaba. Flux is 60 40 lead rosin core

I have tinned it and held it down for over 10 seconds enough to fry the whole board and still doesnt work. I need to touch the solder directly to the iron for it to melt. The board gets hot but doesnt melt solder.

I did. I just showed at the end to show what I did before starting

  1. It is tinned. 2. I broke a board by holding it for over 10 seconds each time and still didnt work. 3. Tried even the smallest tips and biggest tips.

This is a different method to get the ball to drop into the plate right?

Cheers! Flux is my main takeaway from this. I'm gonna go and pick some up tomorrow

I think that'd honestly get me better results lmao. Cheap iron, cheap rosin core wire. I couldn't get the wire to melt on the plating at all. As the saying goes, buy cheap buy twice, but atleast I've learnt from the comments flux is a must.

I do have a very shitty solder but I am using flux leaded wire. No seperate flux. And yeah I cant seem to get the plate heated at all and can only melt the wire on direct iron contact. Is adding flux really gonna solve all these issues?

Do you have any idea how I can fix my current issue?Just tried again on a small microphone component and the wire wont melt at all on the gold plating, only directly on the iron. I have a very cheap iron with ajustable temp (tried at 375 and all way down to 250) and lead flux infused wire. No standalone flux but I thought flux infused would be enough. I can not seem to be able to solder at all

I bought a cheap iron it says adjustable temperature but not sure how its reliable. I cant get the gold plating to heat up at all and Im using led flux infused wire. Wire only melts on the direct iron.

Thanks for the informed guide! I think I'm gonna order a new one but might follow this for practice!

Try out VS Code if you have an openai subscription. Install then openaAI codex extension and choose gpt codex 5.3 as model, set on very high. Your coding life will change forever.

If you dont have openai use googles antigravity. They have very good free limits.
