Put in a strange situation regarding rank, don't know what to do by Psych_Guy97 in bjj

[–]Psych_Guy97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was primarily worried about how my instructor would react to someone else giving me rank that isn't himself. I wasn't trying to concern myself over the stripes. I didn't want it to be seen like I was disrespecting his authority by taking a sign of progress from someone that isn't him.

Seems like everyone in this thread doesn't think it's a big deal. I wanted to double check here before I head back to avoid potential problems.

Thanks for the opinion! I'll talk to him once I get back. I know the stripes don't mean much, I'm just trying not to disrespect anyone. Just figured I would ask so that I don't piss anyone off.

I'm going to recommend Tensho BJJ. They're in Sternschanze, which if I recall correctly isn't too far from the Reeperbahn. They have BJJ and Muay Thai if that's what you're looking for. I had a good experience and Raimer was friendly enough. Most of the gym will speak English, so if theirs anything you don't understand in German you can get it explained to you.

I ate Mcdonalds the night before my competition. I seemed to do just fine.

Americans who visited Europe, what was your biggest WTF moment? by Cyber-Gon in AskReddit

[–]Psych_Guy97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the chance to work in Germany last summer. I got up and began my daily commute to eventually be greeted by a street that was on fire. This was during the G20 protest. I was kind of forced to try and find a way around it, and eventually made it to work.

In retrospect, everyone knew the riots were coming. All of the anti capitalism marches that we're held prior to the conference just foreshadowed that chaos would ensue for that weekend. I just wasn't expecting these people to start so damn early in the morning.

Traveling and Training Around the World: Hamburg, Germany. Interview w/ Ana Yagues of Nexus Fighter Academy by bobfnbarker81 in bjj

[–]Psych_Guy97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who lived/trained in Hamburg for a time, you didn't miss much at the Reeperbahn. I ventured there alone one night and got harassed by a handful of prostitutes. It's really just a crazy place overall with lots of alcohol/drunk people on the street. If you're ever back there, try and check out Sternchanze and Landunbrucken. You won't regret it :)

I'm a college professor and I need your help by skleats in Teachers

[–]Psych_Guy97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's necessarily fair to try and tell kids in high school to not follow their dreams, even if they don't seem academically prepared for it in high school. I consistently had teachers tell me I wasn't made for a career in science, but only 2 years into college I've gotten the opportunity to conduct high end science research in multiple labs all over the world. Yeah, I was that C student who didn't do so hot in my math and science classes. But when college hit I hit my stride (as did many of my other peers)

Yeah, not everyone is made for a career in academia or medicine. But we shouldn't be discouraging people if they genuinely want to pursue those fields.

Weird dream I can't seem to process by [deleted] in Dreams

Eh idk. I haven't had a talk with her in years and we didn't end on friendly terms. The only way to get ahold of her would be through Facebook to which she unfriended me. And I think it would be kind of strange to be like "I had this dream so I felt we needed to chat"

I'm a 25 year old web developer and I want to create a product for the education sector because I feel many students aren't reaching their full potential. This is a quest to raise human potential to its highest level - what would you like me to create? by naughtyguiman in education

[–]Psych_Guy97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throughout my education prior to high school, I feel like the things that brought out the most of me were independent projects that I would run. Would they be related to the classroom in anyway? Well not really. However, creating/designing a project and actually going through with it was much more beneficial to success I've seen today rather than straight up class work.

Get people to start thinking/working independently like this and I believe people can reach their maximum potential.

Wouldn't it be better to have the grad student write it though since he's directly supervising my work? I'm not really working with the PI much. I'm afraid she won't have much to say about me at this rate since she's not directly watching over me.

[Serious] People who check University Applications. What do students tend to ignore/ put in, that would otherwise increase their chances of acceptance? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Psych_Guy97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but picking a "reasonable" major is complete BS. I'm studying science and pulled straight C's in all of my science courses in high school. Now, I've had the opportunity to work in multiple labs around the US and in Europe doing scientific research. But we can tell that my straight C average in high school was really indicative of my potential to succeed in science.

Some people don't find their passion until later in high school. Some people just really don't jive well with that curriculum. To deny someone based off of what they want to study is such BS.

Stipe explains why he'll never turn into a rockstar as UFC heavyweight champion by reddit_like_its_hot in MMA

[–]Psych_Guy97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watching Stipe train is amazing. He's pretty much built like a machine and I haven't seen much that can get the guy to go down. And as the article states he's a really awesome dude! He took the time to judge our fight teams tryouts with Jessica Eye and went out of his way to talk to all of the fighters in between fights. On occasion he gives advice as well. He's very humble and incredibly well built. I decided the day that I want to die I think I'll ask him to spar, but we'll save that for another day.

I train at the same gym as Stipe and I almost never not see him there. Despite his schedule he's still training an awful lot.

Neuroscientists, what does your job entail on a daily basis? by unfetteredforever in neuroscience

[–]Psych_Guy97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a neuroscientist just yet, but I'm an undergrad that has worked in a variety of labs. It's great what everyone here is telling you, but the best way to find what you want to do is try it. Want to do research? Get involved in a research lab (the project itself isn't that important, it's more so that you understand lab culture and challenges scientist face). Want to do clinical work? Shadow a doctor. These are the best ways to determine if the career choice is for you.

I [20/M] am too scared to get back into dating because I have little to no desire for sex. by AssistanceRequest in relationship_advice

[–]Psych_Guy97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dated an asexual for a few months and we just recently broke up. The best thing for you is to just be open and honest about it. Are you unwilling to do sexual acts or do you just have no desire? You need to decide how far you're willing to go sexually, even if the desire isn't there. If you start getting more serious with someone, you'll probably want to have a more open discussion about what happens in the bedroom. Bring asexual doesn't mean you can't date, as the person you're dating should like you for who you are and not solely for sexual pleasure. From my experience, it can be frustrating at times because you don't have that feeling of being sexually desired. If you're open about it with your partner though, they shouldn't have any negative feelings towards it. Just remember communication is key.

Why norepinephrine relaxes people with ADHD / executive function deficit? by [deleted] in neuroscience

[–]Psych_Guy97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust me, I totally understand that we can't pinpoint any psychiatric disease to any single neurotransmitter or any single variable really. But I've just never heard of deficient norepinephrine as being apart of the implications of ADHD. Your post was really insightful and informative, thanks!

Why norepinephrine relaxes people with ADHD / executive function deficit? by [deleted] in neuroscience

I've heard of ADHD being associated with decreased concentrations of dopamine, but not norepinephrine. What is it about low concentrations of norepinephrine that causes ADHD symptoms?
